From the Back Cover
Twenty years ago, against the backdrop of the explosive Watergate scandal, Charles Colson revealed the story of his own search for meaning during the tumultuous investigations that led to the collapse of the Nixon administration. A convicted former special counsel to the president, Colson paradoxically found new life not with success and power, but while in national disgrace and serving a prison sentence.

In the new foreword for this anniversary edition of Born Again, Colson describes the day he sat in his prison cell and began jotting down notes of the events that brought about the fall of a president and the rebirth of his former "hatchet man." Those notes developed into this book, which has sold more than two million copies.

"All I knew was that I had a story I must tell, a story that might bring hope and encouragement to others," Colson recalls. In a new epilogue, he describes some of the ways the story has indeed brought hope, encouragement, and more.

About the Author
Charles Wendell "Chuck" Colson (1931-) was the chief counsel for President Richard Nixon from 1969 to 1973 and was one of the Watergate Seven, jailed for Watergate-related charges.

His later life has been spent working with his non-profit organization devoted to prison ministry called Prison Fellowship. Colson is also a public speaker and author. He is the founder and chairman of the Wilberforce Forum, which is the "Christian worldview thinking, teaching, and advocacy arm" of Prison Fellowship, and includes Colson's daily radio broadcast, BreakPoint, now heard on a thousand outlets. The ministry conducts justice reform efforts through Justice Fellowship.

Colson has received fifteen honorary doctorates and in 1993 was awarded the Templeton Prize, the world's largest cash gift (over $1 million) which is given each year to the one person in the world who has done the most to advance the cause of religion. He donated the prize, as he does all speaking fees and royalties, to further the work of Prison Fellowship.

Could anything good come of Watergate?
By Paul M. Dubuc
It's been 30 years since the events of Watergate started making history. A whole generation has grown up largely unaware, I suspect, of the significance of those events. I've followed Chuck Colson's work and writing almost since the beginning of Prison Fellowship and have developed a tremendous respect for the man. But only recently have I bothered to go back and read this book which tells how it all got started. I should not have waited so long.
This is the very inspiring and honest story of Colson's early career as chief counsel, confidant and friend to President Richard Nixon. As an insider, he gives his own account of the Watergate scandal and an honest confession of his own wrongdoings. This is also the story about how God can change the life of a man caught up in the corrupting influence of political power and bring great good out of evil. Since he was not directly involved in the Watergate doings, Colson probably could have easily avoided being convicted and sent to prison. But his encounter with Jesus Christ and conversion to Christianity strengthened his conscience and led him to plead guilty to an unrelated crime that he did commit. He went to prison and saw a different side of the "law and order" society that the Nixon Administration sought to promote. Even through the fear and despair of those times, the power of God became even more evident to Chuck Colson while in prison.
This is an amazing account of how a life submitted to Jesus Christ can reconcile enemies, create strong bonds of friendship, and heal terrible wounds in the hearts of both the rich and powerful and the poor and helpless. It's wonderful to read. If this book has an impact on you, then you will also want to read its sequel, "Life Sentence".

Refreshing, encouraging, and uplifting
By ransome22
If ever a gust of fresh air wafted out of the smog of Watergate, the story of Christ coming into the life of Chuck Colson has to be part of it. I loved this book. It is a simple, quick, and uplifting read. Colson rejected a full scholarship to Harvard on a matter of principle, and his grittiness, perseverance, and humbling transformation shine as examples of God's artistic handiwork. As other readers have mentioned, Colson is extremely forthright and honest, both in recounting his pre-Christian mentality and his post-conversion weaknesses. He does so to the point of making himself vulnerable and willingly so. I so much appreciate that decision, as I am sure do many others. He details the "obvious" at the risk of seeming simplistic, if only because those simple observations stuck with him and impacted him. One clear example can be found upon his entry to the prison at Maxwell Air Base: "Not only were all uniforms the same drab brown; so were the expressions on the faces. Something strange here. Then it struck me--no one was smiling." This is a fine book and worth reading. One final excerpt to encourage you: "My new friend then handed me a copy of the Phillips version of the New Testament, inscribed: To Charles--It is better to fail in a cause that will ultimately succeed than to succeed in a cause that will ultimately fail--God bless you! Doug. Matthew 6:33. How those words were to haunt and lead me in the days to come!"

A Powerful Reminder of Christian Faith and Community
By Matthew R. Green
Born Again is a somewhat trite title, but the contents of the book are not so. There are so many biographies out there that are lists of events and facts that surround a person; this is not one of them. Colson explains to you what is happening in his mind and heart. It is not merely a book about his conversion, it is the story of the changing of his heart.
Throughout the story, you see the power of God working, not only in Colson, but in the lives of the people around him. I sometimes wonder if Colson painted too bright a picture of the Christians he met like Doug Coe and Tom Phillips, but even if he did, those lights are surely what Colson saw in the midst of his darkness. The changing power of God was evident in them in this work, as was the power in him. Also evident was the power of Christian community that is often lacking in the church. Hughes' offering that the bonds of Christianity overrided their political separation and that he would be willing to give Chuck anything and trust him with it was a powerful statement.
I read this book years ago and found it good. Having grown and come back to reread it, I found it better. It is very much worth reading.

Practical Head and Neck Ultrasound
By Harris D. Levin
The book was written for radiologists who wished to achieve a better understanding of basic anatomy and pathology using high resolution ultrasound techniques. However, as a head and neck surgeon now into the field of diagnostic ultrasound including US fine needle aspiration, this book was exactly what I was looking for. It is clear, well marked and written, and clearly written for a practicing clinician. It does not delve at all into the physics and makes a practical assumption that there is some skill level by the operator prior to reading this book. It is also very well organized with two different tracks. The first is dividing the discussion by functional areas, i.e. thyroid, lymphatics, etc. Next it is written by anatomical areas, i.e. Levels 1-6, larynx, carotid, parotid, etc. If you are interested in getting into this field, you will need a bit of practice with this technology prior to reading the book, but once you do, it is immensely helpful.

Good review book for practitioners doing ultrasound on the head and neck
By A. J. Kelly
I recommend this book for those doctors or techs who want a good overview of head and neck ultrasonography. Full of color photos. It has been very helpful for me in my practice of endocrinology and diagnostic thyroid ultrasounds and FNAs. There is a chapter on FNAs & biopsies. Very useful for those doctors who want to do the ultrasounds themselves instead of relying on an US tech. It was recommended to me by an experienced ultrasound tech.

This is a good book. It is a multiauthour book and there ...
By Amazon Customer
This is a good book. It is a multiauthour book and there are some cracks between the chapters.

The authors are correct when they say that everyone starting out with head and neck ultrasound is confused as the anatomy is difficult. This aspect is well done in this book but some expansion and more images would be helpful. The text is a little dense and needs close reading.

The introduction of the levels in the neck and the various spaces in the neck probably should be placed earlier in the book and integrtaed better with the anatomy of the neck.

A few tables would be a useful addition: for example a table of normal vs suspicious features in lymph nodes or lesions within the thyroid. These would be useful summaries of the information within the text.

The section on the larynx was interesting. It did however have me scanning over my anatomy books to revise the intrinsic muscles of the larynx. A short section on the anatomy of the larynx before discussing the pathology would have been helpful.

Overall this is a good book. It is not the easiest first book on head and neck ultrasound ever written. There are a few minor things that would I feel help - including as ever more images. For those with some familarity with the head and neck I think this book would be very helpful. It is certainly a book that an ENT surgeon would find helpful if only to make his/her life easier dealing with radiology.

The Fifth Discipline: The Art & Practice of The Learning Organization, by Peter M. Senge

Completely Updated and Revised

This revised edition of Peter Senge’s bestselling classic, The Fifth Discipline, is based on fifteen years of experience in putting the book’s ideas into practice. As Senge makes clear, in the long run the only sustainable competitive advantage is your organization’s ability to learn faster than the competition. The leadership stories in the book demonstrate the many ways that the core ideas in The Fifth Discipline, many of which seemed radical when first published in 1990, have become deeply integrated into people’s ways of seeing the world and their managerial practices.

In The Fifth Discipline, Senge describes how companies can rid themselves of the learning “disabilities” that threaten their productivity and success by adopting the strategies of learning organizations—ones in which new and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, collective aspiration is set free, and people are continually learning how to create results they truly desire.

The updated and revised Currency edition of this business classic contains over one hundred pages of new material based on interviews with dozens of practitioners at companies like BP, Unilever, Intel, Ford, HP, Saudi Aramco, and organizations like Roca, Oxfam, and The World Bank. It features a new Foreword about the success Peter Senge has achieved with learning organizations since the book’s inception, as well as new chapters on Impetus (getting started), Strategies, Leaders’ New Work, Systems Citizens, and Frontiers for the Future.

Mastering the disciplines Senge outlines in the book will:

• Reignite the spark of genuine learning driven by people focused on what truly matters to them
• Bridge teamwork into macro-creativity
• Free you of confining assumptions and mindsets
• Teach you to see the forest and the trees
• End the struggle between work and personal time

"Forget your old, tired ideas about leadership. The  most successful corporation of the 1990s will be  something called a learning organization." --  Fortune Magazine.

From the Inside Flap
An MIT Professor's pathbreaking book on building "learning organizations" -- corporations that overcome inherent obstacles to learning and develop dynamic ways to pinpoint the threats that face them and to recognize new opportunities. Not only is the learning organization a new source of competitive advantage, it also offers a marvelously empowering approach to work, one which promises that, as Archimedes put it, "with a lever long enough... single-handed I can move the world."

About the Author
PETER M. SENGE is the founding chairperson of the Society for Organizational Learning and a senior lecturer at MIT. He is the co-author of The Fifth Discipline Fieldbook, The Dance of Change, and Schools That Learn (part of the Fifth Discipline Fieldbook series) and has lectured extensively throughout the world. He lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Where can I find a learning organization?
By Graham Lawes
Since I read this book 15 years ago, the idea of the learning organization has embedded itself in my brain and not let go. I've been on a search to find or create the learning organization ever since. I've never been sure that it really exists in practice, so it's good to see that the revised edition adds the reflections of some successful practitioners, demonstrating that learning organizations have emerged, even if they are almost as rare as they were before the first edition of Senge's book was published.

But learning may be about to become less rare in our organizations. The 21st century brings a networked world of business -- and in this era only living, learning organizations will be able to adapt and survive. All companies will be linked in a global ecosystem. No company will know when and where the next competitor will emerge. To sustain themselves, all organizations will need to constantly innovate and learn.

Senge's book is worth having and keeping on your bookshelf because it gets to the essence of what's needed to create a learning organization. Senge describes five disciplines that must be mastered at all levels of the organization:

1. Personal mastery -- clarifying personal vision, focusing energy, and seeing reality

2. Shared vision -- transforming individual vision into shared vision

3. Mental models -- unearthing internal pictures and understanding how they shape actions

4. Team learning -- suspending judgments and creating dialogue

5. Systems thinking -- fusing the four learning disciplines; from seeing the parts to seeing wholes

As Senge explains, the fifth discipline is particularly important because it ties the others together and helps explain the complex behavior and outcomes that happen in organizations. It illuminates the feedback loops -- the growth cycles, control cycles, and delays that drive our organizational systems. Senge's book gives us a language for understanding these systems and explaining their dramatic successes and failures.-- the virtuous cycles and death spirals that are weekly reported in the news -- and shows us a way of thinking that can help us copy patterns of victory and avoid patterns of defeat.

Learning organizations are rare because the five disciplines are hard. It's self-evident that personal mastery, shared vision, self awareness, and team learning are essential components of a great company, but to master these disciplines in a large organization requires a level of communication, relationship-building, conflict resolution, and the attendant time and commitment, than most people have the capability or willingness to invest. Even in a small team this is hard: the changes we need are at odds with conventional wisdom and conventional management. Currently, it is only the exceptional leader who is able to defy conventional wisdoms and have the personal vision to build a learning organization.

This may be about to change. Business and society are experiencing a dramatic shift. Global business and global development are transforming everything. Organizations will have to adapt or they will not survive. Only vital, living organizations will manage to sustain themselves -- and the vitality they need will not be created by accident, it will have to come from mastery of the five disciplines of the learning organization.

Senge's work is essential reading for anyone wanting to understand how to design, build, and sustain -- or even work in -- a learning organization. It may not be the only answer, and the ideas are certainly hard to put into practice, but the experiments are encouraging. There is a better way of working, and the ideas in this book will help us find it.

By Daniel
A book that borders on Zen practice for organizations, and one that I intend to return to regularly in my work and with my teams. It is an easy read, at least the language is simple and digestible, but it took me about halfway through before I understood what Senge was driving at––how things are far more connected and cyclical than linear, and how much of the modern world has educated "natural thinking"––that is, systemic thinking––out of us. This book is a great primer for reconnecting with our more natural state of being and how it can be connected to learning and working better in our organizations and communities.

Seeing An Organization From A Systems Thinking Perspective
By Josh Gaines
When looking at an organization from a systems thinking approach, it is vital to look holistically of how each discipline - personal mastery, mental models, shared vision, and team learning - integrates into a working framework. Senge (1990), while discussing the integrated relationships of each discipline, stated,
Building shared vision fosters a commitment to the long term. Mental models focus on the openness needed to unearth shortcomings in our
present ways of seeing the world. Team learning develops the skills of groups of people to look for the larger picture beyond individual
perspectives. And personal mastery fosters the personal motivation to continually learn how our actions affect our world (p. 12)
If we understand how these integrated relationships are connected to one another, systems thinking will help broaden our perspectives “… where people are continually discovering how they create their reality” and how it can be changed (Senge, 1990, p. 12).

Houses of Missouri, 1870-1940 (Suburban Domestic Architecture), by Cydney Millstein and Carol Grove

Described as neither east nor west nor north nor south, Missouri served, for much of the 19th century, as America s gateway to somewhere else, the half-point to the western frontier.

It has been home to the nation s richest farmers, ambitious immigrant entrepreneurs, and American visionaries Mark Twain and Thomas Hart Benton. Their houses were quirky mid-American interpretations of East Coast and European idioms distilled by homegrown architects.

At Westmoreland Place, Portland Place, and Parkview in St. Louis and the model Country Club District in Kansas City, progressive civil engineers, planners, and landscape designers transformed wheat fields and flower-strewn prairies into sophisticated planned communities that remain to this day the best places in town to live.

With nearly 300 archival photographs, drawings, and original floor plans, HOUSES OF MISSOURI, 1880 1940, offers an intimate tour behind the facades of 45 purely American houses. Among these are Greystone, the pastoral Gothic cottage of Major Emory Foster in Pavely; Oak Hill, the opulent mansion of the legendary Kansas City Star publisher William Rockhill Nelson; the iconoclastic machine in the prairie, Samuel Marx-designed Ladue residence for department store magnate Morton May; and Chatol, the striking Art Moderne farmhouse in rural Boone county. The authors bring to life the fortunes, motivations, and aspirations of their wealthy and upstanding house owners who rigorously defined what was suitable and respectable living in America s heartland.

Great Book
By Stephen W. McGregor
Having seen 90% of the homes in Kansas City and St. Louis that are on this list (the ones that hadn't been demolished etc), I love this book. Seeing the history of these palacial homes is awesome. While I personally wouldn't want to own one of them, I think is is an inspiration to all that these do exist and the American Dream is ever present.

Wonderful book with wonderful information on the GREAT HOMES OF MISSOURI.

The Fanciest of the Fancy
By David Carlyle
Pictures occupy more than half of "Houses of Missouri," and the pictures show mansions owned by rich Missourians. The authors describe the Vaile House in Independence as "overly ornate," and the same words describe their writing; they throw in a lot of technical jargon to boot. An example of a horrid group of words comes from their description of the August Robert Meyer home in Kansas City: "Except for the denticulated cornice and a classically detailed, mirrored hearth, the room was the setting for the Meyers' rich display of period furniture, which continued throughout."

The book has a bibliography at the end, plus biographies of architects, landscapers, and planners; twenty-nine pages in all. I skipped those last pages, but they might be useful for more technical readers.

I like the pictures and can understand the words, but I also want to see more 'normal' houses in the book. I can't give it more than three stars, because the writers limit it to fancy houses and obscure their prose with jargon and pedantic style, but a student of architecture might give it more than three. David Carlyle, "Another Land."
