Wikipedia defines it as ‘The kafala system is a system used to monitor migrant laborers, working mostly in the construction and domestic sectors, in Lebanon, Bahrain, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. The system requires all unskilled laborers to have an in-country sponsor, usually their employer, who is responsible for their visa and legal status. This practice has been criticised by human rights organizations for creating easy opportunities for the exploitation of workers, as many employers take away passports and abuse their workers with little chance of legal repercussions.’ What Kakande explains in terms that easily understood are shocking abuses of the Kafala sponsorship system in the Gulf Arab region that he believes constitute ‘pure slavery’ for millions of migrant workers who sustain the vital infrastructure in some of the world’s most celebrated and wealthiest economies. His book includes many individual stories that connect and lead to an understanding of just how the Kafala system became institutionalized as a societal mechanism of exploitation on an unprecedented breadth and depth of scope in Dubai, Qatar and other member countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

As Kakande states, “To many in and, most certainly, outside of the region, the system is unfamiliar, especially where the media – operating precariously and frequently compromising the fundamental ethical tenets of journalistic obligations – always hesitate and often refuse to give voice or visibility to the extent of abuse that has come to frame Kafala sponsorship in one of the world’s most progressive and economically developed nations There are many delicate, fragile, and intricate mechanisms to preserve a status quo in Qatar, for example, where few would ever dare to entertain the idea of acknowledging the system’s most insidious flaws and injustices.”

The book offers a brief history of Kafala and the power of the sponsors’ lobby which has worked aggressively to sustain the system even as serious moral challenges to its continuing existence are raised, while adding the parallels describing the perils immigrants face as they seek work in Qatar and neighboring GCC countries and those who remain in the shadows because of their undocumented status. Focusing on the second-class status of immigrants under Kafala sponsorship, Kakande documents societal discrimination that borders on humiliation and indecency and how societal exclusion is enforced through punitive threats and strict controls that prevent migrant workers from traveling freely and safely at their own will. These include instances of employment fraud, wage theft, limited means for resolving contract disputes, frustrating bureaucracy, and, more broadly, institutional racism fortified by hate propaganda, stigmatization and subjugation that are rarely challenged with any rigor or clarity by the local or national media. He reports that even cases involving violence and murder are persistently framed in a way that demonizes immigrants, especially when the evidence would suggest that employers and sponsors were irresponsible about their own legal obligations. However, the abuses do not end there, according to Kakande. The book includes accounts about how the most basic emotional, sexual, and personal rights of immigrants are controlled and ignored. And, he reports on prostitution and human trafficking that occur with alarming frequency that should upend the most popularly conceived notions about moral decency and strictness in the Gulf Arab region.

About the Author
Andrew B. Abel is the Ronald A. Rosenfeld Professor of Finance at the Wharton School and professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He received his AB summa cum laude from Princeton University and holds a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Abel has published extensively on fiscal policy, capital formation, monetary policy, asset pricing, and social security–as well as serving on the editorial boards of numerous journals. He has been honored as the Alfred P. Sloan Fellow, a Fellow of the Econometric Society, and a recipient of the John Kenneth Galbraith Award for teaching excellence. He is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a member of the Advisory Board of the Carnegie-Rochester Conference Series.

Ben S. Bernanke Previously the Howard Harrison and Gabrielle Snyder Beck Professor of Economics and Public Affairs at Princeton University, Ben Bernanke received both the Allyn Young Prize for best Harvard undergraduate economics thesis and the John H. Williams prize for outstanding senior in the economics department. He went on to earn his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and he has been honored as a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Currently, he is Chairman and a member of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System.

 

Dean Croushore is an associate professor of economics and Rigsby Fellow at the University of Richmond. Croushore served for fourteen years at the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, twelve of which as the head of the macroeconomics section. He has taught previously at Penn State University, Temple University, the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins University, and Princeton University.

 

Ron Kneebone is a professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Calgary. From 2006 to 2009 he served as Director of the Institute for Advanced Policy Research at the University of Calgary.  Since 2009, when the IAPR was absorbed into the School of Public Policy, he has acted as Director of Economic & Social Policy Research in the School. Dr Kneebone’s research interests lay mainly in the areas of the macroeconomic aspects of public finances and fiscal federalism. His published research has dealt with issues pertaining to government budget financing in a federal state, the political economy of government deficit and debt reduction, the history of government fiscal and monetary relations in Canada and the characteristics of Canadian federal, provincial and municipal fiscal policy choices.

I bought this text for self study. This book is clearly written so that a self-learner can learn intermediate macroeconomics. I particularly like the appendix that follows the chapter on IS-LM. The problems in both the workbook and the textbook allow me to think deeply about the concepts.

The text does not have any answers at the back of the text.

Every morning for the past semester, I have worked my way through this text. I find the text easy reading and enjoyable.

Class was terrible, book was GREAT

The topic is a hard if you are not a math wiz. I honestly had a lot of trouble with Micro economics because of the terrible book, but thought this book was outstanding in explaining the topic. I did well in this class not because the professor was any good, but because this book had great examples, explained everything in great detail and was to the point. Yes, i need the dumbed down version...this is a basics book. I cant stand ordering a basics book, only to have it be completely over my head. This def did its job. I highly recommend it.

Decent, but do not purchase from Amazon.com if you need MyEconLab

Another reviewer mentioned he/she got a version without MyEconLab (which costs $50 extra to purchase separately). I thought he/she just bought it off of someone in the Amazon *marketplace*. Nope, I bought the version "sold by and fulfilled by Amazon" and I also got shafted. The book is supposed to come in shrinkwrap with MyEconLab login sheet attached to it, but mine came without it. If you need the login, your university bookstore may just be the cheapest place to find this thing.

Update: I gave it 2 stars initially for the rip-off. Now, after having read the book, I'd give it 3 to 5 stars for content. My University of Chicago professor did a lot better job explaining the concepts than the book, so maybe my expectations are inflated, but I thought that Abel/Bernanke could have made it more simple and less verbose. Still, if you can stay focused enough to read this thing (I had a hard time and I like the subject matter), it does explain macro much better than some of the alternatives I've seen before. Also, the "real life" application green sections are incredibly valuable, as they contain some empirical data to show which theories are most likely valid; e.g. does lowering personal taxes actually "stimulate the economy" (increase GDP). A lot of macroeconomics is about which theory/assumptions you end up believing, and this book does a decently good and impartial job at pointing you in the "probably right" direction. You will also gain some appreciation for why macroeconomists can disagree so strongly about basic policy issues.

Overall, I'd give this book three stars compared to my grad school professor but five stars comparing to my undergrad professor and textbook. If you are forced to learn macro by just reading this book, you'll get a pretty good basic understanding without too much pain (comparing to the alternatives of course).

About the Author
Vern Ostdiek was an Associate Professor at Benedictine College, where he had a joint appointment in the Department of Physics and Astronomy and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science. In addition to teaching courses in physics, mathematics, and computer science, he oversaw the Computer Discovery Lab. Vern was named Benedictine College's Educator of the Year in 1999. His research interests centered on the nocturnal dynamics of the lower part of the Earth's atmosphere. Past research topics include noctilucent clouds and frontal zones.

Don Bord is Professor of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Michigan, Dearborn. Prior to his appointment ay UMD in 1984, he taught at Benedictine College in Atchison, KS, where his collaboration with Vern Ostdiek led to the development and publication of INQUIRY INTO PHYSICS, now to appear in its 7th Edition. Don has an abiding interest in physics and astronomy education, particularly as it pertains to laboratory instruction, and he has published several articles in The American Journal of Physics, The Physics Teacher, and Sky and Telescope in this area. He was also co-editor, with Clint Sprott, of the first edition of Great Ideas for Teaching Physics. Don's research focuses on determining the abundance of heavy and rare-earth elements in chemically peculiar stars and the Sun using high-resolution spectra. To support this effort, he has also performed ab initio atomic structure calculations to determine energy levels, oscillator strengths, and partition functions for many of the ions of interest. This work has involved collaborators from around the world, particularly those at the European Southern Observatory and the University of Vienna, as well as UMD undergraduates, and it has appeared in such journals as Physica Scripta, Astronomy and Astrophysics, and Solar Physics. He has been a recent participant in a reverberation mapping project lead by colleagues at The Ohio State University to establish black hole masses in active galactic nuclei. Don has also been active in campus administration, having served as department chair, associate dean for planning and faculty development, and interim dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters. In 2008, he was named Interim Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at UMD, and currently serves as Associate Provost. He was the first recipient of the University of Michigan's Jacqueline Lawson Award for his contributions in the area of faculty governance.
