and Great Britain. We all know about Captain America

Dittmer analyses the superheroes who take their names from and give their allegiance to three countries: The United States, Canada, and Great Britain. We all know about Captain America, while Union Jack and Captain Canuck are much more unknown and surprising. He explains the characters’ politics and histories in-text, and analyses these from the standpoint of geopolitical theory. Dittmer follows how the characters changed as the attitudes of the public of their nation, and the nation’s international policies, have changed. For example, the character of Captain America’s sidekick Bucky was able to happily kill Nazi soldiers in the 1940s. The violence was justified and celebrated as a fantasy for children who wanted to support the soldiers. In later years, an American child wielding a machine gun in a war zone was seen as horrifying and inappropriate. Captain America, who had at first encouraged Bucky, had to undergo a retelling where he disapproved and tried to defend his sidekick’s innocence. The characters also take on different political actions and identities depending on how many countries the title is meant to be sold to. Dittmer’s example of this is the Marvel Canadian team title Alpha Flight, which started as giving Canada representation in a very United States-centered industry but later became yet another branch of X-Men.
I want to see an updated version of this book now that many important and interesting changes have been made in the comic book industry. For example, the first two chapters focus on the choice of personifying a country as which race and which gender. These chapters would have to change some meanings and explanations now that Marvel has published a female Latina America-based hero (America Chavez of Young Avengers) and the current Captain America is Sam Wilson. Wilson is not the first African-American character to don the identity of Captain America, and that is briefly discussed in this book. Unfortunately, I think this book focuses too much on global political theory and symbolism without considering what factual, traceable events were occurring in the world to motivate creation and changes in nationalist superheroes.

Captain my Captain

The great strength of this book is that it shows how comic book creators negotiate tricky questions of ideology and nationalism over long period of time. Dittmer's Captain America finds new ways of asserting his nationalist identity over the years both responding to crisis, say Watergate, and triumph. Superhero comics may have faintly ridiculous plot lines especially when read over many years, but Dittmer does a great job of unpacking stories for the ways in which they construct identity without getting over involved in the minutiae. To a certain extent it is the ways that writers mobilize histories, myths, and legends to keep their characters of the moment that lets us see how comics do not just reflect ideology but create it. A figure like Captain America is hugely variegated and Dittmer shows us how that works nonetheless to make him a nationalist superhero.

About the Author

Jonathan Kantor, MD, MSCE, MA is an international authority on dermatology and skin surgery, who speaks frequently around the world on surgical techniques, skin cancer, atypical moles, wound healing, and other topics. He has authored more than 75 research articles, book chapters, and abstracts, and is active on the national level and in his local community.

 

 Dr. Kantor serves as Medical Director, Florida Center for Dermatology, PA as well as Adjunct Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, the nation’s oldest and top-ranked academic dermatology department. Dr. Kantor’s work has been published in every major dermatology journal, and his research has been quoted in the lay press on television, in newspapers, and in magazines such as Prevention, Reader’s Digest, Self, and Fitness.

 

 One of the benchmark surgical techniques developed by Dr. Kantor, the set-back dermal suture, was the subject of a randomized controlled trial performed at the University of California, as well as a major journal editorial, where it was shown to be superior to the former gold standard technique―potentially changing the standard approach to surgical wound repair.

 

 Dr. Kantor serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, and is a member of the American Academy of Dermatology’s Professionalism and Ethics Committee, where he chairs a workgroup. He has also been awarded the Member Making a Difference Award by the American Academy of Dermatology, the Academy’s highest award offered for volunteerism.

 

 Dr. Kantor received his B.A. in Intellectual History from the University of Pennsylvania magna cum laude and was elected Phi Beta Kappa as an undergraduate. He then pursued broader interests and was awarded a Master's degree in history and entered the Ph.D. program in history at Penn, which he left to begin his formal medical training. During his medical studies, Dr. Kantor earned a National Institutes of Health (NIH) funded fellowship in clinical epidemiology and was awarded both an M.D. as well as a Masters of Science in Clinical Epidemiology.

Such was his chronicle's significance that it was continued, adapted and copied many times during the twelfth century and beyond.

This book offers the first English translation of large portions of Frutolf's Chronicle and its most important adaptations: an anonymous continuation written in 1106, an imperial chronicle dedicated to Emperor Henry V of Germany in 1114, a version by Abbot Ekkehard of Aura and an anonymous continuation that extends to 1125. The translated texts span the century-and-a-quarter from 1000 to 1125, offering penetrating commentary on the reigns of the four Salian kings of Germany, the development of papal reform, the conflict between empire and papacy, and the early crusading movement. Significantly, these texts present startlingly different perspectives on the history of the period - from Frutolf's pro-imperial account, which emphasizes the divisive influence of Pope Gregory VII on the unity of church and empire, to Ekkehard of Aura's uncompromisingly pro-Gregorian interpretation that casts Emperor Henry IV of Germany in the role of consummate villain.

Frutolf of Michelsberg and his continuators offer to specialists, non-specialists and undergraduates alike a rich and fascinating example of how medieval authors wrote and re-wrote history. Alongside other contemporary texts translated in this series, the book provides a window on the conflict that fundamentally altered the relationship of church and state in Western society.

Drafting-Revisited

When I studied drafting in school, we used a text by the same authors. I found it great, as it gave enough detail on how to draw, without being wordy, and there were ample pictures & diagrams to help. I'm no artist, by the way, but every now & then I did a couple of problems to do something different.
Time came when I wanted to get back into re-learning drafting, but due to family, and time constraints, there's no way I could again take courses. So, I bought the book.
If you're a beginner, don't be put off by the title.
This is exactly the same as the text and workbooks, by the same authors.
Start at the beginning, and pay attention to basics.
If you're a pro, it will refresh your skills.
This has a workbook with it, so practice isn't a problem.
It's all too true, that one shouldn't attempt to draw CAD until the "Board" has been mastered. Without the basics, you're building on a house of cards. My husband works in an engineering firm and sees this all the time. Some of the ideas inside, may seem outdated, but trust me, the priciples are still the same.
I highly recommend it. Personally, I found it practical, challenging and affordable.

Same Story as "On the Prowl" anthology . . .

From other reviewers' descriptions and the title of this story, I'm pretty sure that this is the same story as in the "On the Prowl" anthology. While I enjoyed the story a lot in that book as a romantic urban supernatural fantasy, and I like Karen Chance's world, I don't feel the need to buy it again. Just a caution for anyone in the same position.

I do appreciate the fact that it is available for anyone who wants all of Karen Chance's works but does not want to buy the anthology (though the Eileen Wilks and the Patricia Briggs stories are also worthwhile).

Claire is a rarity in the world of mages who when assisting her boss in a large sale, finds herself on the auction block. When Heidar of one of the Fae tribes helps Claire escape, he never realized he was only Buying Trouble (by Karen Chance). Now they are on the run and in the midst of it all, Claire finds out she is far more powerful than anyone, including herself, ever anticipated.

I'm a huge fan of Karen Chance's Cassandra Palmer books so I was glad to see this story in the same world but featuring different characters and many more magical creatures. We learn a little bit more about the different kinds of Fae in the author's worlds through Heidar's explanations to Claire of the differences between them. One additional aspect I enjoyed is the strong romance. Yes, there is some romance in Cassie's series, but while those books are more urban fantasy than romance, Buying Trouble is the reverse. Fans of Karen Chance, be they new or "old," will find themselves enjoying this story, which was probably my favorite in the collection.

Love this novella & sad it's not a stand alone series

I read this book in print in a paperback called On the Prowl. Which contains the short stories of four authors I really loved the story and the unexpected twists. When I got to the end I was all ready for there to be mention of the next book. To be told it's a prelude to the Midnight daughter series doesn't work for me. That series is more vampire driven. I am a vampire, paranormal fan but this book is more Fey & dragon driven. I hope she writes more using this story line as the base. That said I loved this book.. Worth the read..
