None Like Him: 10 Ways God Is Different from Us (and Why That's a Good Thing), by Jen Wilkin

God is self-existent, self-sufficient, eternal, immutable, omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, sovereign, infinite, and incomprehensible.

We're not.

And that's a good thing.

Our limitations are by design. We were never meant to be God. But at the root of every sin is our rebellious desire to possess attributes that belong to God alone. Calling us to embrace our limits as a means of glorifying God's limitless power, Jen Wilkin invites us to celebrate the freedom that comes when we rest in letting God be God.

Review

“I have had the privilege of personally knowing Jen Wilkin for several years. She is a woman intoxicated by the God of the Bible and has written None Like Him by staring at his majesty. The soul is healed not by gazing at its broken pieces, but by gazing at the beauty of its creator and surrendering to the ‘I can’ts, but he cans.’ I pray you melt into the relief of belonging to the One who is unlike any other as you read this book.”
—Matt Chandler, Lead Pastor, The Village Church, Dallas, Texas; President, Acts 29 Church Planting Network; author, The Mingling of Souls

“In an upside-down world that has humanized God and deified man, Jen Wilkin brings us the best news imaginable: our God is infinitely greater, more powerful, more majestic, and more wonderful than we can possibly fathom. Jen calls us to lift our eyes upward, to earnestly contemplate his attributes, and to humbly acknowledge our own limits. As we do, our hearts will be filled with wonder and awe that such a God should stoop to save and love us.”
—Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth, author; radio host, Revive Our Hearts

“My wife and I love Jen Wilkin. She represents a rising generation of evangelical women discontent with the status quo, yet fiercely committed to the Scriptures. Her teaching is provocative without approaching compromise, revolutionary without seeking novelty. This book is rock solid, and it portends an encouraging future for evangelicalism.”
—J. D. Greear, Lead Pastor, The Summit Church, Durham, North Carolina; author, Gaining By Losing

“Far beyond a Sunday school lesson listing the attributes of God, None Like Him evokes a sense of both familiarity and wonder around the characteristics of the Almighty we worship. This book puts us in our place, beneath the God of all and over all.”
—Kate Shellnutt, Associate Editor, Christianity Today; Editor, Her.meneutics

“This book made me want Jen Wilkin as my best friend. But far more than that, it made me grateful that Jen Wilkin’s God is my God. Books that are this theologically rich while also being this funny, this personal, and this penetrating are rare. So don’t miss this one.”
—Nancy Guthrie, Bible Teacher; author, Seeing Jesus in the Old Testament Bible study series

"As [Wilkin] compares human flaws and weaknesses with God's steady and unchangeable characteristics, readers of faith will be reinvigorated by the assurance of God's unvarying, all-encompassing nature."
—Publishers Weekly

“What happens when women learn about the attributes of God? They rightfully praise him for who he is! Jen Wilkin has written a helpful book introducing the attributes that belong to God alone, while revealing our own tendencies to try to produce counterfeits in others or ourselves. A better understanding of who God is builds our faith and helps to guard against damaging theology. Jen presses the reader to see how God’s incommunicable attributes affect our own spirituality.”
—Aimee Byrd, author, Housewife Theologian and Theological Fitness

“Many of us attribute to God the characteristics of our fallen earthly fathers. In this study, Jen walks us through a better foundation for knowing and relating to our Father in heaven—Scripture itself. None Like Him is a helpful resource that reminds us that ‘the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.’”
—Wendy Horger Alsup, mother; author, Practical Theology for Women and The Gospel-Centered Woman

“This wonderful book is big on truth and big on God, which means it is very good for my soul. Jen’s exploration of God’s attributes and her reminder of all the ways I’m not God and don’t have to be God ministered to me as a wife, as a mother, and as a Christian. If true wisdom starts with the knowledge of God and the knowledge of ourselves, then here is a book full of wisdom.”
—Trisha DeYoung, happy wife to Kevin DeYoung, author of Just Do Something and Crazy Busy; stay-at-home adventurous mother of six

“Many of us believe that greater peace and self-awareness come from exploring our own psyche or learning what makes us tick. But Jen Wilkin believes that greater self-knowledge comes from knowing and reverencing the One who is knowledge himself. In None Like Him, she invites us to learn how God’s nature transcends our own and why the difference between us is good news. In fact, it’s the very best news.”
—Hannah Anderson, author, Made for More and Humble Roots

“In my ministry to college students, I am rarely asked questions about morality or theology. They ask for wisdom. Young people yearn to know how the world works and how to work well within it. Jen sets us on the right path by inviting us all to the essential starting point: awestruck wonder at our Maker. We must see how the eternal connects with the mundane if our lives are going to be filled with a sense of meaning. This is a resource that I would love to see in the hands of all of our students.”
—Ben Stuart, Executive Director, Breakaway Ministries

None Like Him: 10 Ways God Is Different from Us (and Why That's a Good Thing)
By Jen Wilkin

Published by Crossway

An uplifting book and takes us to a deeper issue as God and His attributes. Written in an entertaining and accessible language while remaining deep.
The author shows us with much biblical evidence the natural attributes of God, also uses many illustrations and personal experiences that help us better understand the content.

Although it seems to be aimed at a female audience, None Like Him, it is a book for men, that is for every believer in Jesus Christ. Some of the issues addressed are:

The infinity of God: The God without limits.
Self-existence.
Self-sufficiency.
God's eternity.

At the end of each chapter, you can find: Bible verses (to memorize or study), application questions and a prayer. These elements allow the content of this book was even more marked in our minds.

None like Him is an introduction to the topic of Divinity. It shows God as the Scriptures reveal. This book will be very enriching for all those who want to know God.

"Even the most intellectually gifted theologian will barely scratch the surface of understanding who God is."

You Were Created to Reflect the Image of God - not be Him!
By T Jones
I’m always hesitant to read an audiobook narrated by its author, as most authors are not professional narrators. This can make listening difficult. Thankfully that’s not the case with None Like Him by Jen Wilkin.

She nailed it!

She sounds crisp, clear and has the right intonation. Her reading speed was neither too fast nor too slow, which made the pacing of the book flow comfortably. The audio sounds professionally produced with no background noises to distract.

In this audio, she covers ten attributes of God. These aspects will make you remember how to be in awe of the Creator all over again.

And though these aspects might sound scary and intimidating, they aren't. The author manages to explain through Scripture and story, that these scary-sounding attributes are actually meant to comfort us.

No longer do we need to feel obligated to be in control of everything. God has it all under control! And He loves us like no one ever could. So we can let go of that false sense of running the show and let the One who made the show have His power back.

With ten chapters devoted to each attribute, the author provides relevant Scriptures to study at the end. Along with a few study questions to help you dig deeper into each aspect of God. I particularly like the very end. This is where the author encourages the reader to write out a prayer based on that chapter’s attribute.

Overall, I found this audio book to be professionally produced and filled with great information. I can see this book being used in a small group study on God’s attributes. But, it would work equally well as a personal study for any individual interested in learning more about God and how we are created in His image, but He is so much more than we could ever be (and why that’s a good thing)!.

I received this audio book free from the publisher in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

Encourages the reader to worship God
By Katie King
In None Like Him, Jen writes about ten attributes of God that are exclusive to Him and do not apply to humans. She helps the reader to understand the attribute, why it is a good and essential part of God, and why we are not defined by that attribute. She writes, "I want us to consider the majesty of a limitless God. I want us to meditate on his perfections...And along the way, I want us to stare down our tendency to ask others and even ourselves to be what only God is."

Each chapter ends with summary questions, verses for further study, and encouragement about how to pray through what was discussed in the chapter. The inclusion of these study aids makes this book a good choice for a small discussion group.

Jen's love of Scripture is evident throughout the book and inspires the reader to draw near to God. She encourages, "Read it (Scripture) with new eyes, eyes that hunger for a loftier vision of who he is...Behold there your Maker, fearful and wonderful. Lift us your eyes."

I received a copy of this book from Crossway in exchange for an honest review.

The Language of Clothes, by Alison Lurie

The classic book about the clothes we wear and what they say about us.

Even before we speak to someone in a meeting, at a party, or on the street, our clothes often express important information (or misinformation) about our occupation, origin, personality, opinions, and tastes. And we pay close attention to how others dress as well; though we may not be able to put what we observe into words, we unconsciously register the information, so that when we meet and converse we have already spoken to one another in a universal tongue.

Alison Lurie, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novelist, is our savvy guide and interpreter on this tour through the history of fashion. She provides fascinating insights into how changing sex roles, political upheavals, and class structure have influenced costume. Whether she is describing the enormous amount of clothing worn by early Victorian women or illuminating the significance of the long robes worn by aging men throughout history to connote eminence, her analysis is playful, clever, and always on target.

Absolutely Fascinating!
By sally barry
I can't wait to go out and buy this book, which I read in hardcover from the library. It is very well researched and illustrated and discusses clothes and fashions from long ago up till today. And not just fashions and how they change, but what they MEAN. For example, did you know....in olden times, not just elegant clothing, but cloth itself was and admired and expensive commodity. The more cloth making up one's clothing meant that person was wealthy. Paintings of the period featured draperies in the background to indicate a person's wealth, and even today designer clothing uses more cloth and is cut fuller, carrying on the tradition. Anyone interested in not only fashion and clothing but symbols and history should read this book, it is just fascinating and delicious.

A great social history of clothes
By Beatrice Izzey
Well written, well argued history, not text book like at all, but like a long New Yorker article. A pleasure to read. It's not about silly petty fads but great social movements that underlie trends and revolutions. I think more photo illustrations would help.

A meditation, not a history
By D.E. Wray
This is an amusing essay on how Lurie interprets various clothing, outfits, and styles. The book is easy to read and is a way to pass the time pleasurably. Potential readers, however, should be aware that the "language" metaphor does not hold for long: in this book, clothes are like a language only inasmuch as they convey meaning. One could just as validly and convincingly write about, say, "the language of bookshelves" or "the language of bicycle riding styles." Those interested in a history of clothing would do well to look elsewhere, and those interested in analyses of clothing would do well to look elsewhere as well (e.g., The Fashion System). Potential readers are also warned that Lurie tends to make sweeping generalizations about persons not part of her social world (e.g., the poor or non-Anglo-Saxons) and some may find these generalizations (never backed by citations of evidence) offensive.

Amidst the Shadows of Trees: A Holocaust Child's Survival in the Partisans, by Miriam Brysk

As if to rescue the integrity of the history of the Holocaust, a wave of survivor memoirs, many literate and engaging, have appeared over the last ten years. They announce that the logical and important places to begin to examine that history are eye witnesses. Miriam Brysk’s chronicle is among the more exceptional of these works. It reflects her own life: highly accomplished, intelligent, detailed and thoughtful. At age seven, Miriam, her mother Bronka and father, Chaim Miasnik, a renowned surgeon, escaped the Lida ghetto and joined Jewish partisans in the Lipiczany Forest. Before the end of the war, Miriam estimates that her father had saved hundreds of lives and helped build and supervise a partisan hospital in the swamps of the forest. Constantly hunted by German soldiers, she experienced childhood terror that has remained with her. She lost her innocence, her childhood, her youth as she clung to her mother and her prized possession, a pistol. Her head was shaved so she would look like a boy. Her memory of the details of that time—both in the Lida ghetto and in the forest—remains remarkably sharp and distinguishes this memoir from many others. —Sidney Bolkosky, William E. Stirton Professor in the Social Sciences, Professor of History, University of Michigan-Dearborn

Review
Beautifully told and evoking every detail of a child survivor s experiences of the Shoah, the horrors she witnessed, the losses she experienced, the hardships and heartbreaks she survived, this story is a rare example of a girl who, disguised as a boy, lived with the partisans in the Lipiczany Forest after escaping from the wholesale slaughter of the Lida ghetto inmates. Her authentic testimony, her total recall of every event, every emotion belie the assumption held by some that the testimony of young children cannot be trusted, because they were too young to remember. We are given insights into Miriam s relationship with her parents, their loving protection during times of incredible hardship, but also their human frailties and failures in the years of exile. Finally the story also covers the postwar, post-Holocaust years and the amazing strength and ambition with which Miriam created her own career and built a loving family relationship in the New World. We are treated to samples of Miriam s poetry and art in addition to her unique, unforgettable memoir. Surely this book deserves a place among the many Holocaust accounts on your library shelf. --~ Susanne M. Batzdorff, Librarian, retired

Miriam Brysk s story of ghetto life in Lida in Belarus and partisan life in the nearby Lipiczany forest sheds light on Jewish activism during the Nazi Holocaust. It also tells the story of a lost childhood and of challenging years spent disguised as a partisan boy accompanying her father and mother in the resistance. Dr. Chaim Miasnik. Miriam s father, was chief of staff and lead surgeon in a forest hospital and later received the Order of Lenin for his work with partisans. Miriam and her family survived until liberation and later came to the U.S. and constructed normal lives. Miriam herself became an accomplished scientist. This book sheds light on Jewish participation in resistance during the World War II and in saving other Jews. It is also a testament to the resilient powers of youth and to the power of survivor memory many years after the events. --Kenneth Waltzer

This powerful book is a must read
By Roberta Goldberg
For those who grew up in the U.S. after the 1950s or '60s the history of WW II is in the past, and filled with huge numbers of victims of Nazi onslaught, particularly the number of people killed, or imprisoned. Little is remembered about those who valiantly fought, and survived. Here is a book which describes the lives of people who endured this terrible time, not only by banding together, but as individuals whose daily lives are a testament to the human spirit.
In the author's life we see the utmost example of the human spirit, demonstrated from terrifying childhood to fully realized adult.
This book is so compelling that it is hard to put down once you start reading.
In today's world it is imperative to realize the realities of war and recognize it not only in political terms, but what it does in personal terms to the lives of ordinary people, and how important it is to do all we can to prevent it.

The Pain of Holocaust
By pamarella
A great book! Heartbreaking! Different than most. The hardships are unbelievable! It is by God's grace that anyone survived and once they are finally liberated, there are hardships anew! The lost family and joyful memories now turned to sorrow is unbearably difficult for survivors. This survivor explains well her pain during and after the war. Through the eyes of a child. It is powerful!

Lost childhood
By Kelton Press
Amidst the Shadows of Trees: A Holocaust Child's Survival in the Partisans is a unique and deeply moving story of a childhood lived in peril that ranges from the urban ghetto of Lida to the virgin forests of Belarus. This beautifully written book illuminates author Miriam Brysk's harrowing experiences--in Lida, where she was selected to die before the community's need for her father's services as a doctor spared her; in the forests of Belarus alongside Jewish partisans who, also needing a doctor, had entered the ghetto to take her family away; as a child living with the constant fear of abandonment, of being separated from her parents, of death. Even among the partisans, mortal danger is always at hand. There is the threat of rape, leading her parents to shave her head and dress her as a boy to protect her. There is terrible cold, inadequate shelter, insufficient food, and the never-ending possibility of being found by Germans or the collaborators who hunted Jews. As a child holocaust survivor myself, I highly recommend Miriam Brysk's book--it keeps the memory alive.
