About the Author
Frank M. Carrano is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at the University of Rhode Island. He received his Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Syracuse University in 1969. His interests include data structures, computer science education, social issues in computing, and numerical computation. Professor Carrano is particularly interested in the design and delivery of undergraduate courses in computer science. He has authored several well-known computer science textbooks for undergraduates. Walter Savitch received his Ph.D. degree in Mathematics from the University of California at Berkeley in 1969. Since that time he has been on the faculty at the University of California at San Diego and is currently a Professor of Computer Science and director of the Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Cognitive Science. Professor Savitch's research areas include complexity theory, formal language theory, computational linguistics, and the development of computer science education materials. In addition to writing numerous research articles and involvement in other editorial projects, he has written a number of well-known computer science textbooks, including Pascal, Ada, and C++ CS1 and CS2 textbooks.

A Revised Look at Modern China

This book, now in its second edition, has been quite successful and has in one sense managed to fill a perceived need among literate westerners, particulaarly Americans, to know something about modern Chinese history.
However, few people appreciate what a ground-breaking book this was, at least in its first edition. That it was a popular history of China ("popular" in the sense that it was not primarily designed to be a college text) was not unique; reasonably well-researched surveys of Chinese history have been around since the nineteenth century. But for those of us who sat through an undergraduate course on Chinese history prior to 1980, Spence's approach was refreshingly un-Eurocentered.
Once upon a time, Chinese history was presented in two neat halves: the first half was "traditional" China from prehistoric times to the Opium Wars (1840's). The second half was everything else going forward. The overall impression was that everything changed when the white man appeared - which is, of course, a misperception, to put it mildly. Spence conceives of "modern" Chinese history as beginning with the Ming Dynasty, and treated the Western intervention as just one theme among many.
Thus, Spence was able to present a new view of China to a new generation, and it was a viewpoint that explains a great deal more than previous ones did. That he does it in such a compelling way, opening new vistas up to us in the process, is what makes this a great book. A great deal of thought and sensitivity has gone into this work, and it deserves to be appreciated for that.

An excellent history for the novice

I enjoyed this book for several reasons. The writing is excellent. It does not read like dry history. The author starts with the fall of the Ming dynasty. This is an excellent choice. By starting here, the reader better understands why China views the west it does. This places current events more in historical perspective. I also liked the author making value judgments about various historical figures and events. I am sure these value judgments will provoke controversy by the academic community. Spence does a good job of showing that the Communist revolution was more than a cult of Mao. Others were involved and Mao had his limits of power. This book is an excellent choice for someone who knows little about Chinese history but wants a quick survey of recent history.
As for weaknesses, I thought the coverage of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution was weak. The horror of these two events is discussed too dispassionately. If readers have no previous knowledge of these two events, it is hard from this text to understand the nature of the true tragedy.
As a disclaimer, I am not a scholar of Chinese history. I had only read a few books and have had no academic courses in Chinese history

The best one volume history of modern China

I have read Jonathan Spence's history course on modern China is one of the most popular courses at Yale University. "The Search for Modern China" is a great introduction to modern Chinese history. Spence's prose is very readable and the book is obviously exceedingly well researched.

Unlike the tendency of most Americans to falsely claim the United States and the West in general are at the center of the historical unverse, this book presents modern Chinese history primarily in a Chinese context. I especially enjoyed the chapters about the fall of the Ming dynasty and the Kangxi emperor, who was probably the wisest and most capable of the Qing emperors.

Americans and other people should be better able to understand after reading Jonathan Spence's book, the resentment many Chinese still have about recent, as well as current Western interference and continued popular hostility toward Japan. For nearly a century, as Spence ably writes, China endured a system of western imposed unequal treaties, a semi-colonial western and Japanese presence in many large Chinese cities and Japanese invasion. The western intrusion in China had the inadvertent consequences of weakening the Qing dynasty. The Japanese invasion prevented Jiang Jieshi or Chiang Kai-shek's Nationalist armies from completely defeating Mao's Communist forces. Had there been no Japanese invasion of China, it is likely the communists would have never prevailed over the Nationalists. The century of western and Japanese imperialism in China helps explain why many Chinese still harbor strong suspicions and resentment about recent and current United States policies toward China.

While the book is fairly long, I think Spence could improve his book even more if he made it longer, with more extensive coverage of Chinese history since 1960. My only specific criticism of this book is that Spence should have more thoroughly covered the immense human disaster of the so-called Great Leap Forward, where 20 to 30 million human beings, primarily peasants died of starvation because of the extremely misguided economic policies of Mao.

Also, the Cultural Revolution was far more terrible than portrayed in this book. I highly recommend Jung Chang's "Wild Swans" for an excellent first hand description of the cruelty common by Red Guards during the Cultural Revolution.

In general though, Jonathan Spence's book is an excellent introduction to modern Chinese history and can be reread for further understanding.

Good read

Since reading is an addiction with me, I do it very occasionally, otherwise nothing else would ever get done. I purchased this book some time ago and found myself with a few free hours last evening.

Enjoyed the pace, the story moved along nicely. I did not figure out the ending until at least the last couple of chapters. The table was a nice touch to keep interest up at the end. I'm not a blood and violence reader so I was grateful there was little of that. Neither do I read books with explicit sexual scenes. The romance was just enough to be a pleasant accompaniment to the genealogical story. Overall it was a good evening's read.

An essential read for Catholics and anyone interested in the Church

I have dipped into many books and articles on Vatican II and have come away confused. So many books are seen through the prism of a particular prejudice that it is hard to sort out fact from fiction. This is a wonderful introduction to one of the most important events of the 20th Century. My appreciation for Vatican II grew in leaps and bounds after reading this book. This is truly a remarkable work: lucid and informative. This is a must read for those who are Catholic and anyone who has an interest on the impact of the Church in the world. It is neither left nor right. It will allow you draw your own conclusions. For myself it became clear to me that the work of the council was absolutely necessary and timely, especially in understanding the changes to the liturgy. It also is made clear that the Vatican II did not come out of the blue, rather, it was part of an evolution in thinking that had been brewing for years. I wouldn't even attempt to read another book on the council until reading this.

Excellent Review of Vatican II's History

Margaret Lavin's history of the Vatican II's documents reflect, I would think, the discussions and inputs of many class sessions with graduate students. The reflections on the genesis of the teachings and insights of the bishops at Vatican II and on the implementation of these teachings is excellent. At a half century from the "moments, one tends to forget how stunning those "moments" actually were, how they have changed the Church and society, and how much change is still ongoing. This is a most useful text for a discussion group of those who experienced both the "before" and "after" of the Council.

About the Author
Aruna Chakravarti is a well-known academic, writer and translator. She was also the principal of Janki Devi Memorial College, University of Delhi, for ten years. The Inheritors, her first novel, was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers Prize 2004. She has also translated Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyays Srikanta and Sunil Gangopadhyays Those Days and First Light. She is the recipient of several prestigious awards, among them the Vaitalik Award, the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Sarat Puraskar.

Fact or fiction: hard to tell.

I have visited the large palatial residence of the Tagore family in the Jorosanko district of Calcutta twice. Between those 2 visits I bought a copy of "Jorosanko". On my second visit to the Tagore residence, which is a 'must-see' place in Calcutta, I met the deputy director and asked her what she thought about Ms Chakravarti's novel. She said that it was fairly sound from the factual point of view. With that approbation, I decided to read "Jorosanko".

This lengthy novel - or is it really a history - deals with the lives of the women in the branch of the Tagore family that lived in the residence at Jorosanko. It describes the complexities of living in a large joint family, especially one as illustrious as the Tagores. Moving in places, informative in others, this book makes for a pleasant read - a well-written family saga. Luckily, a family tree is given at the beginning of the book. I had to refer to this constantly, so large was the Tagore family. I marvelled at the way that the author managed to handle so much information about the lives of so many branches of the family, but kept wondering how much was fact and how much was fiction. And, this disturbed me. I could not make up my mind whether the author was writing fiction or biography even though she does point out at the beginning that hers was a work of fiction, but some things relating to important historical figures were not. It upset me that I did not know which parts were history and which parts were not.

The book has further stoked my interest in the Tagore family, but now I feel that I wish to read a properly annotated biography.

Mr. Podojil has 32 years of experience in the Industrial Safety, Health and Environmental field. He is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHCM), Certified Hazard Control Manager (CHCM), Registered Environmental Assessor (REA), Registered Environmental Professional (REP), Accredited Safety Auditor (ASA), a Certified Utility Safety Administrator (CUSA) and a Certified Professional Environmental Auditor. Mr. Podojil has been listed as an Honored Professional in the National Registry of "Who’s Who in America". He currently writes safety articles of interest for several national magazines and is a requested lecturer for various national organizations as a motivational speaker at Professional Development Conferences. Mr. Podojil has been featured on several television specials for his positive contributions to the safety abatement endeavors of Industrial Technology/Arts programs in several states.

He has been honored as a catalyst for his never-ending quest to make the work place and classrooms a safer environment for working and learning. He has been selected for his safety expertise by the University of Minnesota to consult with many corporations in the metal working industry to reduce hazards inherent in the metal working machinery arena. What a great feeling this book leaves you with.

I chased down Jack to buy this book after hearing him speak once. I offer it to family and friends who I think need one of those "Happy thoughts" that cause a constant smile lasting an entire afternoon. Jack's passion for quality teaching is something every educator wants to have in the front of every class.

Exactly what I've been looking for!

This book is exactly the kind of book I have been wanting for a long time! As an advanced course, I feel it would be excellent for someone who has completed 3 years of university study, or for someone who has finished or is near the end of the course at the Defense Language Institute.
This book presents authentic Arabic texts from a variety of sources and on topics about the Middle East. This gives the double advantage of not only learning the Arabic, but also teaching important information about the history, culture, and society of the Middle East. Along with the Arabic texts, pertinent grammar lessons are presented with thorough explanations in English, followed by several examples usage in Arabic. There are also many questions and exercises, presented in both Arabic and English to assist in comprehension.
I have not yet recieved the accompanying cassette, but several of the listening selections come from a series by the BBC called "Pick of the Month". I already have the BBC cassettes and I'm very pleased that the authors chose these as their listening exercises.
Most students of Arabic are aware of the famous "EMSA" Elementary Modern Standard Arabic texts from the 1960's, as these are the standard texts used in many universities. This book is by far the best Arabic text to be published since EMSA/IMSA!
For motivated students, I highly recommend this book as a tool for self-study and maximizing your capabilities in Classical Arabic.
For professors, both at Universities and DLI, I stongly suggest that you consider this book for incorporation into your courses. For DLI, this book covers important grammar that I didn't get, and for the Universities, this offers excellent authentic material to augment the more intensive grammar.
Thank you Dr Dickson and Dr. Watson. This is the book I wish I could have written!

Very useful mid- to advanced textbook

Just to add to the other reviews, this textbook (which I used at 3rd year undergraduate level at Durham) is useful also to the solo student struggling to advance his or her Arabic. Buy the cassettes too, as they're an integral part of the course. I also recommend strongly that the private student buy the Teacher's Handbook too if he has no teacher as this contains - amongst other things - suggested translations and transcriptions of passages on the cassettes.

Simply stated -- A MUST HAVE! If you're a budding intermediate level student of Arabic, you must have this. I use this as a self study course to reinforce my reading foundations, vocabulary and current idomatic useage. I waited MONTHS for the tapes, but they are essential now that they are universally available.
This book is useful for self study, group study or with a (preferably) educated native instructor/tutor. There is also a fine teacher's supplement.
Overall this is a tremendous value. The soft cover and the tapes together are less than 50.00 and there is a mountain of challenging material.
Not to mention a good deal of pragmatic reading in geography, culture and social studies. Each chapter is broken down into the same exercises from reading to classical texts to listening. The classical texts are dealt with deliberately, not haphazardly. The whole thing is, in fact, deliberate and well thought out.
Shouldn't disappoint...

Fully functional, basic webstore

This is an exeptionally well written book for the beginning webstore developer with

It walks you through a complete design of the side with the end result that you have a basic webstore that you could actually take operational. The only weakness in the credit processing section. It's written for a European credit card gateway. It would be nice if one of the more popular US gateways (e.g. authorize.net) was also included.

I also sent a couple of questions to the author and he was responded very quickly ... obviously he's interested in making sure everyone reading the book is successful. 5 stars for that alone.

Clear exposition to writing E-Commerce sites

This is a clear, well-written book on building an e-commerce sites. Even though I have already written a few commercial sites in asp.net, mostly using IBuySpy as an example, this book explains all the details that are useful to know to more fully exploit asp.net and Visual Studio.net.
Highly recommended, go for it!

My children can see how to put their monster to bed, while going through their own routine as well. As a mom to two boys with trouble going to sleep, this is a book we'll be reading together every night.

I can't wait for a hard copy!

Birth of How to Put Your Monster to BedAs the mother of 6 children, I have had my fair share of frustrating evenings and sleepless little "monsters."
I've also always wanted to be a writer. I've had several items published, but not a children's book, which I really wanted to accomplish.
On a whim, I watched a webinar and joined an online class that showed step by step how to create a children's book in a short amount of time, and how to find a quality illustrator that didn't cost an arm and a leg.
When I finally put that ball in motion, How to Put Your Monster to Bed was finished and ready for print just two months later! 
I really hope you love this gem of a book. The character that Gaby and I brought to life is just the most adorable little thing! 
Keep your eye out for a soft nighttime plush toy that your little monsters can take to bed with them!

Great book for your little one's bedside table

Love this book as a new way to help with bedtime routines. Simple, yet clever and original rhymes such as 'My thirsty is dry!' and 'My sleepy is hiding way up high!' make for an engaging read and kept me smiling until 'the monster' is in bed. Great book to keep on your little one's bedside table.
