Lydia "Liddy" Claver has had a bad week. Fired from her adult education job teaching jewelry making, she also discovers that her husband, Martin, is having an affair with their friend Fay. Even worse, her gynecologist informs her that at age 49, Liddy is six months pregnant. Since Liddy and Martin haven't had sex in five years, the baby is undoubtedly the result of a brief affair she had with a 20-something student. Liddy, a "big" woman, had no idea she was pregnant and now it's too late to have an abortion. Before she has a chance to tell her family the news, Liddy delivers the child prematurely while visiting her beloved lesbian great-aunt Cleo in Cornwall. With baby Hope and the truth finally out, Martin stomps off angrily to Fay. First-born daughter Laura, predictably controlling, decides it's best for everyone if she raises Hope as her own daughter. Middle child Miranda, a bulimic workaholic, wants the baby to save her marriage to Richard, who wants children desperately, to her dismay. The youngest, gay son Alex, wants the baby so he can avoid making any career choice at all. Add to the mix a pushy, aristocratic mother-in-law and a dash of naughty sex, and there's something here for everyone in search of a light read, although gracefully aging women might hope for something less messy.

With her light, deft touch, British first novelist Clare scarcely prepares the reader for the extent of dysfunction in her fictional family. Almost 50, Liddy Claver is preparing for menopause, not motherhood, when she learns that she is seven months pregnant the result of a fling with a man half her age. Telling husband Martin is a problem, since they haven't slept together for five years, but she soon discovers that Martin is having an affair of his own. Liddy keeps her pregnancy secret, confiding only in two dear friends and her beloved elderly aunt, whom she is visiting when she prematurely delivers her daughter, Hope. The shock of discovering Liddy's secret is followed by Liddy's three adult children vying to raise the newborn Laura to compensate for a recent miscarriage, Miranda to keep the lover who wants children, and gay Alex to be a parent. All is resolved in the short final chapter, narrated by Hope ten years later. Despite a certain disconnection between tone and content, this novel is likely to hold readers with its appealing protagonist and relentless activity and to find a place in popular fiction collections. Cliched Drama to the Core

Liddy is having an extremely bad week - job loss, philandering husband, no sex in 5 years with him and suddenly pregnant. For a woman about to turn 50, Liddy's life seems like the life of a twenty something turned decidedly sour.
While the book has redeeming value as a light read, Clare has used a dictionary of cliche's to come up with an over the top story. A controlling older daughter, a bulemic younger daughter and a gay son - the situation is completely predictable. The most vived characters in the book are the 90-something lesbian great-aunts Cleo and Cyn. In the mess of everything that's happened, all Liddy wants is to make things right with her husband who feels he needs to decide between her and his lover. (Honestly, would you take a cheating man back?)
Although the book is very predictable, I actually enjoyed the light, simple read - I could even understand the British vocab. Not bad if you don't want something as depressing as Oprah picks.

Liddy Claver thinks she is going through the change. Well, in a way she is, just not what she thinks. At fifty, she is pregnant and learns that her husband is cheating on her with a friend. What's more, the baby's father is not her husband, just a much younger man she had a fling with several months ago. She is also now jobless, her adult ed class having been eliminated.
Before Liddy can find the courage to tell her husband, or anyone in her family what has happened, her lesbian, very old aunt needs her to come and take care of her while she recovers from an illness. On her way back home, Liddy goes into premature labor and winds up having to stay in Cornwall a bit longer. Hope, her new child, is almost two weeks old before anyone in the family other than the aunt finds out about her.
Liddy's husband is hurt and leaves her. Her grown children's reactions are varied. For their own reasons, each wants to adopt Hope. One daughter sees the baby as a way to save her flagging relationship with her male roommate. The gay son finds her the ideal solution to his and his partner's desire for a baby. The last daughter feels obligated to adopt Hope, as she is the only one with a stable home and family. While all these generous offers are touching, perhaps, Liddy feels quite capable of taking care of her daughter herself. That remains to be seen.
***** Unlike most British imports, this novel does not confuse the American reader with unfamiliar terms. Liddy's situation is a unique one, and so is her family. With guts and determination, she handles a life where if it's not one thing, it's three, with grace and aplomb. Humor and tears will be replete in this too unreal not to be real book. *****

Quick, hot and intense.

A quick, sexy read with open, honest characters with no pretense. Rep and Lo were made for each other and Ms. Covington did a wonderful job creating enough sexual tension to smoke up the screen of my iPad. When the going gets tough and Rep's career is in question, Lo doesn't mince words. I love the tell it like it is exchanges between them, and the love scenes sizzle. No simpering drama here, just in your face honesty, well written and attention holding. Highly recommended.

I Love this book. Could not put it down. The characters are amazingly relatable. That is saying something cause she is a rock star and he is a professional football player. You can't get any more opposite than that.

"That's two times in three days that you've come to my rescue and I'm going to insist that you let me thank you properly." Um, I can think of several ways to thank him! Mmmm.. Rep is one hot sexy demanding hunk of man and I want one of my own! Lola is so lucky I'm almost #Jealous!
This book is witty. "Don't worry old man. I'll have you back before the nursing home curfew." Oh my god, I almost spit out my coffee!

This book was great. I loved the characters and the story. The drama was just right that it didn't take away from how sexy the story was. This is a fantastic story. I say bravo to all the books in the Kindle World. They are fantastic!

Teyla Branton grew up avidly reading science fiction and fantasy and watching Star Trek reruns with her large family. They lived on a little farm where she loved to visit the solitary cow and collect (and juggle) the eggs, usually making it back to the house with most of them intact. Fascinating Read

I don't often do book reviews, but I just wanted to give this series a plug. It has the most fascinating "plot" running through the series and I'm always amazed at the creative ideas that some authors are able to come up with and build into fascinating stories that keep you wanting more, even though they are totally removed from reality as we know it. I am about half way through Book 4 and I'm forcing myself to slow down because I figure it may be a while before the next book comes out - which is the reason for my review. The authors always ask readers to give reviews so that they can spend their time writing more books instead of having to spend their time marketing their current books. So, Keep on writing Teyla -- can't wait to see what you come up with next.

Refreshing

I read the whole series, which is odd for me. I usually read the first book, then start another book by another author, but with this series, as soon as I finished one book I'd buy the next one and not come up for air until it was time to buy the next book. The action is almost non-stop. There is something for everyone in this series. And it's clean entertainment which is rare today. After finishing the last book I wanted more since I got so attached to the characters, who are almost immortal. You will not be disappointed with these books.

Excellent series! Well Done!

I have read each of these books and literally could not put them down for long. I was completely pulled into the story and the lives of each character, I enjoyed reading these books that did not have vampire and werewolf junk in them, I also enjoyed the fact that it was not dripping in sex and cursing. In my opinion many books have an overflow and leave nothing to our own imaginations. I will say between books there was no relaxing of the suspense it built and stayed right on the edge throughout, Well done! Thank you!

About the Author
Xiaojing(John) Zhang is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Texas of Austin (UT Austin). He received his Ph.D. from Stanford University, California, and was a Research Scientist at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) before joining the faculty at UT Austin.

Dr. Zhang’s research focuses on integrating Micro-electro-mechanical Systems (MEMS), nano-materials, micro-imaging and biosensors to provide innovative solutions to critical healthcare issues. Dr. Zhang has actively engaged in teaching new concepts and methods in these emerging biomedical engineering frontiers and has demonstrated innovation and excellence in engineering education. The materials presented in this textbook are based on his lecture notes while teaching a popular course on molecular sensors and nanodevices at UT Austin for the past 8 years.

He has a track record for developing both core and emerging engineering curriculum along with developing well-funded research programs with fellow students. Among his numerous awards, Dr. Zhang received the Wallace H. Coulter Foundation Early Career Award in Biomedical Engineering, NSF CAREER award, DARPA Young Faculty Award among many others. To recognize his accomplishment in research and education, Dr. Zhang was selected to attend the prestigious US National Academy of Engineering, Frontiers of Engineering (NAE FOE) program in 2011, the NAE Frontiers of Engineering Education (NAE FOEE) program in 2012, and subsequently China-America Frontiers of Engineering Symposium (CAFOE) program in 2013.

As an active member in his professional community, Dr. Zhang has served on numerous international conference organizing committees and editorial boards. He is an editor for ASME/IEEE Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems (JMEMS) and an associate editor Biomedical Microdevices.

Kazunori Hoshino received his PhD degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan, in 2000. He worked for the University of Tokyo from 2003 to 2006 as a lecturer in the Department of Mechano-Informatics, School of Information Science and Technology, where he conducted several government funded project as the principal investigator. In 2006, he joined the University of Texas at Austin, where he works as a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Biomedical Engineering.

His research interests are (1) NEMS/MEMS-based nanophotonic sensing and imaging systems and (2) microfluidic detection, imaging, and analysis of cancer cells. He has more than 100 peer reviewed publications in top international journals and conferences in the field of sensors, micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS), and micro total analytical systems (µTAS). He is the inventor of 6 issued US patents and 12 issued Japanese patents. The courses he has taught at the University of Tokyo and the University of Texas at Austin include: molecular sensors and nanodevices, intelligent micro-electro-mechanical systems, digital control systems, and engineering mathematics.
