Li Dong is an educator with more than 40 years of experience teaching in China, the UK, the USA and New Zealand. He has published numerous articles on Chinese lexicography and is the author of six dictionaries published by Tuttle Publishing, including Tuttle Learner's Chinese-English Dictionary, Tuttle Compact Chinese Dictionary and Tuttle Pocket Chinese Dictionary.

Not designed for use with Kindle

This is a good dictionary but I bought it for use with my Kindle. Unlike other dictionaries that are facilitated for Kindle this one has no look up capabilities so if you want to say look up the English word "or" you have to do a general word search for "or" which will return every word in the entire dictionary that has "or" in it, i.e. 1000's of words; not very practical. Other dictionaries for Kindle have an index where you can select the first couple of letters of the word you are looking for and go to that page then quickly find your target word. This one does not.

Perfect for its purpose...

... which is to have a very compact, attractive (colour headwords), accurate dictionary that allows you to quickly find the main meanings. There are no example sentences but it's too small for that. Chinese words are given in simplified characters only (so it's not useful in Taiwan or Hong Kong) and also in pinyin (a Romanization system, allows you to pronounce the words). Chinese-English is correctly in character order within the pinyin (unlike the crazy system of the Langenscheidt dictionary) so related words are grouped together. You could use the English-Chinese section to find what you want to say (e.g., room, reservation, station...) and point to the Chinese characters, so that your conversants could read for themselves. To use the Chinese-English section you can try to find the pinyin from the sound of the word, otherwise (e.g. with signs) you have to look up the Chinese characters using a typical radical index / stroke number index -- this is unavoidable.

The next step up from this is a Concise dictionary (e.g. Commercial Press/Oxford) which has example sentences, more usage, and traditional characters as well as simplified, but these are about double the size and weight. This one here slips right into a small pocket, as advertised.

About the Author
In 1996, while still an undergraduate, Dr. Julian Darius founded what would become Sequart Research & Literacy Organization. After graduating magna cum laude from Lawrence University (Appleton, Wisconsin), he obtained his M.A. in English, authoring a thesis on John Milton and utopianism. In 2002, he moved to Waikiki, teaching college while obtaining an M.A. in French (high honors) and a Ph.D. in English. He currently lives in Illinois.

Wanna know why Batman Begins worked so well?

Over the past few years, the art of the reboot has come a long way. One of the most successful reboots, of course, has been Christopher Nolan's Batman films. What makes this book, Improving the Foundations, so helpful is that it methodically breaks down all the creative choices the filmmakers have made and relates them to the comics, looking at bits and pieces from the numerous retellings of Batman's origin over the past seventy years or so. The book is sophisticated and smart in its observations, but it's written in a very clear headed and accessible way--no literary jargon or heavy quotes. Just a great, close reading of Batman's origins and the way they are adopted or tweaked in the movie. Would that every quality film franchise had a companion piece like this one.

Very detailed, but entertaining

"improving the foundations: batman begins from comics to screen" by Julian Darius is an in-depth look at the movie Batman Begins and the beginnings of Batman in the comic form. Mr. Darius begins with the history of Batman in the comics (Detective Comics #27 May 1939) and shows the reader how Batman became to be and how his story evolved over the years. From there, the author then delves into the movie, Batman Begins, and breaks it down into acts and scenes. He begins each act/scene with a description of what is happening at that moment. For example:

Act 1, Scene 3 (Flashback Sequence 2), Part 1: Continuing directly from the previous flashback, Thomas Wayne pulls his son Bruce up from the well and takes him into Wayne Manor.

Mr. Darius then goes into detail about the history of that scene and its importance. He refers back to particular comics that help illustrate the scene. He will also go into the choice of actor for a role in the film and give some background on the person. What I really liked is that Mr. Darius also included illustrations from the actual comics throughout the book.

I'm not a big Batman fan, but I love the behind the scenes and history of things. This book did not disappoint. I really like the attention to even the smallest details. I enjoyed having each act/scene broken down and the significance of it explained. This book makes me want to go back and watch Batman Begins while holding the book in my hand and referring to it.

Just like the X-Men book, this is a tour of Batman Begins and how it may, or may not fit into the overall picture of who Batman really is. For 99 cents for the Kindle version, how can you go wrong?
