Strongly suggested for Multivariable Calculus course

I got this manual to help me with the homework for my Multivariable calculus course. It should be noted that it only gives the answers to the odd problems, just like the back of the textbook, however it also provides the steps needed to get to that answer. Although my teacher assigned the even problems for homework, if I didn't understand how to do it, I could compare the steps for an answer to a similar odd problem. I definitely would not have done as well in this course if it weren't for this book.

A Classic

Kirk's book is the best place to begin understanding the conservative impulse in Western politics. The centrality of Christianity and of the culture that was built upon it are admirably highlighted from the later part of the 18th century through the middle part of the 20th. Kirk's knowledge of political theory during this period is breathtakingly expansive.

One can also read this volume as an erudite commentary upon the destructiveness of opposing forces, such as progressivism, utilitarianism, and scientism.

It is tragic that the current political science graduate has scarcely heard of Kirk and tends to assume the conservative movement to be a retrograde force identified primarily with Barry Goldwater.

Kirk's book is a masterpiece that belongs next to Richard Weaver's Ideas Have Consequences. Both should be staples in college and university curricula. This is probably asking too much, however, of moribund academic institutions in which only the left wing of politics is allowed a voice.

Bring The Music

McGee delivers a haunting personal chronicle of an incredible career in which he connected with music in the forefront at a momentous time, through the 80s and 90s and rushing towards the turn of the millennium.

Later it becomes clear that he has not rested on his laurels, his passion persists, despite the blistering pace of work and play he and his many friends and collaborators endured and nurtured for 30 years.

I really enjoy his matter-of-fact humility and straight-ahead knowledge, the nuances of his language and personality that come through in this book.

It's fascinating to read about the deals taking place, artists he represented and encouraged, brought into the spotlights, and the gradual but powerful way he learned how to do business with the major industry players.

By nature it might seem episodic, but there is an arc of history there that he's too self-effacing to harp on, he just offers it up in such a way that once concluded you feel as though you spent a long weekend at his remote country house enjoying drinks while he tells these unique tales. A true artist of passion and intellect.

This book will inspire you to reach out and bring more music into your life.

Drug-fueled tales of Primal Scream, Oasis, music industry & more

Perhaps you need not to have been a devotee of the author's famous Creation Records label to appreciate this books, but I think it's safe to say that your enjoyment of this tome would benefit from having heard and enjoyed some of the bands that Alan McGee signed and managed, acts such as Primal Scream, Oasis, My Bloody Valentine, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and the Libertines.

Creation Records was indeed an influential and exciting label and in addition to some of the well-known acts, the label released great records by terrific lesser-known bands too, including Biff Bang Pow, a band that McGee himself was a member of. This book is more than a tell-all tale of the bands that McGee signed or hung out with, but it also delves into his own turbulent journey in life, one that was dominated for many years by excessive drug use. McGee pulls no punches when it comes to those decadent days, but I found the endless drug-fueled tales a bit tedious after a few chapters. Okay, you were a mess; we get it. Much more interesting to me was reading about dealing with, and recording with, bands such as House of Love, Ride, and the prolific, underrated genius Ed Ball.

While some passages of the book are entertaining, informative, or just plain funny, other parts meander and drift, or are just confusingly presented. McGee is a colorful character with plenty of wild tales to tell, but he's not much of a writer and the book suffers from weak prose, lack of continuity, and his use of too much Scottish slang. There were times I would stop in the middle of a paragraph, wondering what --- or who --- he was rambling on about. Where were the editors? On one hand, you could call McGee's writing style refreshing and true to his maverick spirit, but on the other hand reading such gibberish can be maddening for the reader.

All in all, though, this was a fun read, and a book that will be of interest to anyone who was immersed in the "indie" music scene of the 1980s and 1990s.

About the Author
Harry Golombek OBE was born on 1 March 1911 in London. He was a British chess International Master and honorary grandmaster, chess arbiter, and chess author. He was three times British Chess Champion, in 1947, 1949 and 1955. He became a grandmaster in 1985. He was famous as an author of many books and magazine articles. During World War II he worked at Bletchley Park deciphering the German enigma codes. He died on 7 January 1995 in the United Kingdom. Julius Du Mont was a chess player, author and translator best known for “500 Master Games of Chess” and “The Basis of Combination in Chess”. He was born December 15, 1881 in Paris and died April 7, 1956 in Hastings, England.

First published in 1947. Jose Capablanca was a phenomenon who burst onto the chess world and took top prize in the first ever elite tournament in which he participated. This was at San Sebastian - otherwise known as Donostia - in the Basque country of Spain in 1911. Capablanca's style was serene - no position seemed to trouble him, and he crushed most of the established European grandmasters with seemingly little effort. Only against the mighty Lasker did he experience serious problems. Then in 1921 Capa - as he was known - obliterated Lasker in their world title match and took the championship without losing a single game. Other triumphs followed, such as London 1922, and Capablanca acquired the legend of an invincible superman when he went for 8 years without losing a game! His supreme moment was in New York 1927 - a quadruple round trial of strength between Capa himself Alekhine, Nimzowitsch and three other contenders for the crown. Capa whitewashed the field, creating a fresh masterpiece practically every day. Possibly this easy victory left him over-confident for later the same year he lost his world title to Alekhine.

Grandmaster Emeritus Harry Golombek was from his early days a worshipper at the shrine of Capablanca's genius. In this book he lucidly expounds the thinking behind the Cuban champion's greatest achievements and faithfully records every subtle nuance of his extraordinary ability to cut to the essence of what was truly transpiring amongst the myriad complexities of the chess board. If any player truly exemplified the classical style, it was Capablanca.

Harry Golombek was perhaps the king of chess writers. Chess correspondent for The London Times and The Observer, he possessed an unrivalled gift for transforming a chess game into an heroic saga with himself as the bard, singing the exploits of his chosen heroes of the mind. Several times British Champion, Golombek also played top board for England in the Olympiad and represented the British Chess Federation in the FIDE World Championship cycle. He was fluent in Russian and personally attended the World Chess Championships of 1954, 1957 and 1958 as a judge

Another unusual book featuring the psychiatrist Hector (follow-up to HECTOR AND THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS)

I read the first book in this series Hector and the Search for Happiness, some time ago. I found it to be a bit odd and perhaps overly sentimental or even simplistic, but as a psychologist myself, I connected with this quirky novel featuring a psychiatrist on a quest to discover the meaning of happiness. I had no idea that this book was even part of a series until I recently discovered upon this second volume.

Book 2 features some of the same characters, including, of course, Hector. This time, his quest is commissioned by the employer of his long-time girlfriend, Clara. Hector agrees to take on a complicated assignment which has him calling into question the components of love, what it means to be in love, how an attachment forms, and more. Clara plays a more prominent role this time around, and a host of interesting new characters are introduced as well.

Author François Lelord has an unusual writing style which I can't help to find rather compelling. First, he often describes things vaguely, such as referring to where Hector lives as "Hector's country" without ever actually naming it. (In the first installment, I believed it was Britain, but now I think it's France.) He also frequently progresses the plot by having Hector write aphorisms and other bits of wisdom in his "notebooks." Some of the story takes on a quality that seems to flirt with magical realism at times, and although I usually do not like this style at all, for Hector's Journeys, it somehow feels right.

There is also a third book in this series, Hector and the Search for Lost Time which I hope to read soon as well. I would recommend HECTOR AND THE SECRETS OF LOVE to those who are open-minded, open-hearted, and willing to consider a rather different offering.

An Interesting Summer Filler Novel.

This was more of a break filler book between everything I’ve been reading – I honestly didn’t think I’d get to reading this book, but here we are.
Very similar to the first novel, Hector and the Search for Happiness, the story follows Hector’s story as he searches for the secret to love and the components of love. Love is a very complicated thing so I’m surprised they managed to put it in a book.
This book gives a unique insight to love and notes about love but I wouldn’t take them too much to heart, perhaps use them as references if at all.

Hector is a psychiatrist and has noticed that a lot of his patients come to him about love – how to find it, how to get over it, how to keep it, how to deal with it.
After being invited to a pharmaceutical meeting, he is sent on a journey to find a professor that’s currently studying love and how to bottle it into a drug. He believes love can make people happy, and the company believes this will be something that people will spend money on. But Hector believes that love is more complicated than people can understand, however he is interested in people’s views and perspectives of it.

First, this book is a lovely follow-up and addition to the series, however, I feel like perhaps it lost its lackluster in comparison to the first novel.
There was something magical about it, like someone reading the book to a child for a bedtime story, told in a very innocent tone that was calm and soothing. This book has that same similar tone but just different – not as whimsical as the first novel.
It definitely made a lot of good points that were backed by science (although how accurate the science is, I don’t know since I’m not a science major), but it seemed pretty cohesive to me.

Hector spoke about the five components of heartbreak as well, which I won’t talk about because spoilers, but it isn’t until the very end that the components of heartbreak, which seem negative, are turned into a more positive light.

Overall the story was very interesting and did shed a certain light about the aspects of love and what love could mean to some people, but it’s hard to really have an opinion when you remember that this book is fiction, even if it was written by a psychiatrist turned author. I get what message he’s trying to relay but love is so complex that I don’t think it’s something you can explain and bottle in a book.

This book was still entertaining and was easy to follow – a quick read, and somewhat informative.
It was a good filler book but I wouldn’t put too much stock in it or take the book too seriously.

Powerful prayers from the word of God!

I have not completed the prayer book yet, but so far, it has been a powerful blessing for me. The prayers are very thoughtful and reflect back to the Word of God. I like the structure of the book as well. It starts off with a Bible passage to read and then a reflection Bible verse, asking for forgiveness, praise and worship, then the prayer points, and finally ending with confession. I believe that the author is an anointed man if God. To the author: I wish you many blessings and may you continue to be a blessing to others by the grace of the Holy Spirit. I have even recommended this prayer book to a family member.
