After reading series real of Patricia Thayer's books, I purchased several more of her books. I like that most of her stories have babies, toddlers, or young children in the stories. This book was enjoyable and I did not put it down until I had finished the book.

Reconciliation and Restoration

The atonement is the solution to the offence caused by human sin toward a holy God. This is a book describes the necessity for Christ's atonement, the nature and necessity of Christ's atonement, and God's purpose for it.

Contributing auithors clearly present a strong defense for it. I have read the book twice and plan to read it again. This is one of those rare gems that invade our hearts and draw us near to the heart of God.

Essays on Christ's Atonement

In the Bible atonement is associated with man's sin. God commanded Israel to set aside one day each year, the 10th day of the 7th month, which He called "the day of atonement" (Lev. 16:29-30; 23:27-28) and herein one finds compelling and edifying essays on the essential doctrine of the Atonement made by Christ. In the OT God's people were to bring a sin offering, an innocent animal sacrifice "whose blood was brought in to make atonement" (Lev. 16:27). God had said, "For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls: for it is the blood that makes an atonement for the soul" (Leviticus 17:11) and in the NT "without shedding of blood is no remission" (Hebrews 9:22). This truth separates Christianity from all other religions.

This assemblage is published in conjunction with the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals. This fine book is a compilation of outstanding essays on Christ's Atonement from recent PCRT conferences; this collection makes a powerful case for the Reformed doctrine of Atonement. In this volume the reader learns how the death of Christ and the shedding of His blood atones for man's sin.

Grace and the Atonement

This slim collection of essays is rooted in the proposition that the doctrine of atonement is under attack. While I agree that there are a number of views about the nature of atonement and what it accomplished, I dispute the idea that the doctrine itself is under attack. Given the publisher (P & R Publishing) and the group who assembled the project, the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals, I believe the perceived challenge is to the application of the the Penal Substitution theory. It is not clear as to why this distinction isn't made clear other than the possible notion that any other theory is so far outside of the range of discussion that it can simply be dismissed.

The essays, assembled by editor Gabriel Fluhrer, come from presentations given at the Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology. Bringing the best Reformed minds to bear on a topic of importance to Christ's Church, this collection of discussions on atonement from the Conference is almost universally excellent. Heavyweight pastors and theologians J.I. Packer, James Boice, R.C. Sproul, John Gerstner, Sinclair Ferguson, John R. DeWitt, and Alistair Begg each repeat the truth and application of the atonement brought about on the cross at Calvary from a variety of perspectives.

Packer and Boice are at their usual best offering clarity in defining atonement drawing the important distinction between propitiation and expiation. Boice's essay on the language of the marketplace and his exposition of the grace in Hosea bridges God's wrath and His redemptive love and bear repeated reading. Gerstner's emphasis on centering atonement only within the narrow stem of the TULIP is out of place among the winsomeness of the other authors. Perhaps I misread his intentions but it appears that atonement, in his view, can only be seen in its limited form, something the other authors avoided emphasizing.

Atonement is a fine addition to the literature on this doctrine but it remains to be seen where it fits in the library. It is an excellent introduction to the admittedly narrow definition of the doctrine of Atonement but it doesn't offer anything new in the way of ideas.

The authors of the essays represent a variety of scholarly disciplines and subject matter: from the "performed" life of the Dominican preacher, to coronation processions, to book presentations; from satirical music speeches, to the rendering of widow portraits, to the performance of romance and pious narrative. Diverse in their objects of study, the essays in this volume all examine the links between the actual events of public performance and the textual origins and subsequent representation of those performances.

About the Author
Robert Gandt is a former Navy fighter/attack pilot who logged over 300 carrier landings in Navy jets. He has been a test pilot, airshow performer, and airline captain. In 1995 he returned to his old base to fly the F/A-18 Hornet and write the sensational BOGEYS AND BANDITS: THE MAKING OF A FIGHTER PILOT. He is the author of ten fiction and non-fiction books. His screenwriting credits include the CBS series, PENSACOLA: WINGS OF GOLD. THE KILLING SKY is the fifth in his acclaimed Naval Aviation series, featuring his hero, Cmdr. Brick Maxwell, skipper of the VFA-36 Roadrunner squadron.

Modern Navy pilots have become push-button warriors

"The Killing Sky" is the fifth book in Robert Gandt's great series of novels about Brick Maxwell, and it's one of the two best. (My other favorite is "Acts of Vengeance", the second book in the series.)

Brick Maxwell is a U.S. Navy pilot and squadron leader, flying an F/A-18 Super Hornet off the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan, stationed in the eastern end of the Mediterranean Sea. The story starts with a joint exercise with the Israeli Air Force ending with an American F/A-18 getting shot down for real!

What went wrong? Did the Israeli pilot really push the missile launch button instead of just announcing a simulated kill? And why does the female Israeli Mossad agent make a play for Brick Maxwell? Is she trying to get information out of him or does she have other motives?

This book contains the same three general plot elements as most of Robert Gandt's novels:

- exciting "you're sitting in the cockpit" descriptions of modern Navy flight operations, with dogfights, carrier-based landings and takeoffs, and push-button warfare with modern smart bombs and missiles.

- geopolitical machinations, this time involving high-level Americans and Israelis and Palestinians. And to keep the excitement up there are internal conflicts within each national group, including a really nasty American political envoy with presidential ambitions.

- romantic involvement for Brick, this time involving not just one but two women.

I liked this book a lot, despite the rather slow start. The suspense gets cranked up by the under-handed dealings going on between the politicians and the resulting armed conflicts between the Palestinians, the Israelis and the American forces. Is the United States really going to invade Palestine and engineer a democratic process, just like in Iraq? And who is really behind the decisions that are causing the continued escalation of hostilities?

One of my criticisms of Robert Gandt's novels is that the characters don't really come across as real people. This is still true in "The Killing Sky", but less so than in the first books in the series, another plus for this book.

Recommended for all fans of military action novels, as is the whole Brick Maxwell series.

Gandt is great!!

The Killing Sky is the 5th book in the Brick Maxwell series and it is as good if not better than the previous four. Just like the other Gandt novels in this series it took me one weekend to read as I couldn't put it down. It is great for couples since it appeals to both men and women. It has everything from the fast paced excitement of being in the cockpit of an F/A-18 Super Hornet to romance. I would best describe this book as Tom Clancy meets Top Gun which is a great combination. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for an entertaining story!
