About the Author
BILL BEVERLY grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and studied at Oberlin College and the University of Florida. His research on criminal fugitives and the stories surrounding them became the book On the Lam: Narratives of Flight in J. Edgar Hoover's America. He teaches American literature and writing at Trinity University in Washington, DC.

I Liked It, A Lot.

The story 'Dodgers: A Novel', by Bill Beverly is raw and it's dark, about a variety of personalities young and old, circumstances and happenings many people haven't a clue about. The protagonist is 'East' who is sixteen, a gang member and who is chosen, with others, to commit an out of state murder. It's about being born into a situation, surviving it, progressing through it and eventually, if one is lucky, getting above it; it's noir-fiction.
All the main characters are very well developed: you will like them and hate them, depending on their role, but with little in between. And although the story progresses steadily from it's beginning to the ending, switchbacks, discoveries, failures, successes and a good many surprises will keep the reader excitedly turning pages. There is but a bit of sexual innuendo, a minimum of colored language and deep, dark, drama abounds. I couldn't put it down.

Takes you into another world

This book tells the story of a young man called East, or Easy by his friends. He is only 15 years old and has lived his entire life in a small part of the projects in South Central L.A. where he has been a guard for a local drug house. It's the only world he has ever known and he does his job well. He has a younger brother named Ty but he barely has a relationship with him; they share the same mother but otherwise seem to have little to do with each other. Even though he is younger, Ty is much more aggressive than East and Ty seems to have an antisocial personality to boot. Despite living where he does and doing what he does, East has managed to live a fairly quiet life despite all the odds stacked against him.
When it turns out that one of their houses gets raided, and when they find out that a witness against one of their bosses needs to be killed, East and 3 others are sent out to do the job. The problem is that the witness is in Wisconsin, Plus, East does not really have a violent personality and he has never killed anyone before. But East is sent on this mission along with his brother Ty and two others from the streets.
The story is fascinating as we follow East's journey as we see what he does through his eyes. He has not only never ventured out of Los Angeles, he has never left his part of the neighborhood, referred to as The Boxes. We see his wonderment as travels by car throughout the heartland and we share in his new experiences, both with meeting all the new locals and seeing far different landscapes and weather conditions than he has experienced in his short life.
Even though we witness some terrible things, we still find ourselves rooting for East and hoping that he can turn his life around because he is at heart, a basically decent kid thrown into impossible circumstances. It is only at the end that this question gets resolved.
This is really a terrific book and it's hard to put it down after you've started. The dialogue seems spot on and I feel like I've entered and learned about a far different world than my own by learning about East and seeing things through his eyes and oh-so limited experience.

THE SENTIMENTAL EDUCATION OF AN LA GANGBANGER

Crimes and violence --shootings, beatings, car theft, drugs-- abound in this book, but to categorize it as just a crime novel misses the point. Rather, it’s an example of the classic theme of moral education: a troubled and questing young man grows and changes as he experiences life. But the man this time is an LA gangbanger, not a notably reflective type. His name is East, no last name given, and he’s barely turned sixteen. He loves his mother but she’s so deeply into crack she barely notices him when he shows up at her apartment: her attention is on the money he drops off for her. He’s got a half-brother, Ty, who’s two years younger than East. But they never got along and now Ty has left home. He’s working as a hired gun: want someone killed, he’ll do it. Both work for Fin, the top dog in their section of the sprawling south LA ghetto, The Boxes. Fin is East’s father, not that you’d notice it the way he treats him.
East’s job is to stand watch outside one of Fin’s drug houses: long hours, narrow focus, but no direct involvement in violence. When the house is raided, East’s future is uncertain: failures don’t lead long lives in south LA. But Fin –maybe because East is his son--sends him with three other boys on a car trip across the country to wipe out an informer about to turn state’s evidence against Fin. One of the boys is Ty and locked in a car for long trip, the combination is volatile.
East, who’s never been outside his neighborhood in south LA, is confronted with a world he’s never known. He has to make decisions that will determine his own chance of survival in an alien, but strangely seductive new world. Along the way, he glimpses the possibility of a different world for himself. The result is explosive, jolting, and sad. Without preaching, just by telling East’s sad story, Beverly has written an indictment that is just as effective as Jill Leovy’s account of ghetto life in south LA, Ghettoside (2015).
