Comprehensive manual for researcher and clinician
By Derek Grimmell
Since I went through graduate school in the mid 1990's, we have learned a lot about the function of sleep. This book covers it all. About half of the book does an overview of the architecture of sleep, network activation and de-activation in sleep states, neurochemistry, and the like. The other half touches on the clinical implications of sleep and sleep deprivation. I use this stuff with my clients routinely now. I've put several graphs and charts on my computer to use with either insomniac or depressed clients to help them understand why it's so important to restore sleep, as well as improve mood: the research now explains why the two so often overlap. The chapters on napping, behavior change with sleep deprivation, and memory impairment with sleep deprivation contain basic ideas my clients all seem glad to have learned, and it motivates them to try harder in treatment.

Overall, an excellent overview of sleep and sleep-related issues for the researcher and the clinician both.

Great review of a much mis-understood subject
By Flicker
I just wish I had more time to plow through the book in a real study of the information because it is excellent so far. Grading it by the scale of underlinings in the book it would be a 95%. This is a profession that is in its infancy. It is equally an aspect of living that is so undervalued by dunderheads that think sleep is un-necissary. Hopefully the world will no longer hear people in the medical profession say that "patients are not here to sleep, but to get better". This book also uses examples of other species sleep which of course helps to appreciate sleep in an evolutionary model and the ubiquity of sleep to those who have not been educated as fully in that direction.

Top of the line material, with depth that's unmatched
By buyer
Enticing material written by top experts in the field of sleep neurobiology and edited by two men that appear to lead the pack. I was surprised at the depth of the material and my head is still reeling from it all. If one were not goal oriented upon completing it, it would be a mighty task due to the depth of the material. I doubt there is a better text on the subject. Buy it and you won't be disappointed.
