Develop the Finger Independence to Blend Alternating Bass Lines, Chord and Melodies
Fingerstyle blues is a deceptively demanding genre. The engine that drives the music is the 1/4 note alternating or static bass line played with the thumb. This technique is mastered first before melody and then chords are introduced on top. Every technical exercise is introduced via a musical example or phrase that will naturally become part of your playing.

Best FingerStyle book I've found..........

I have several books on learning Finger-style acoustic guitar. This is by far the best of them.
First: It begins with simple exercises to master the most challenging part of finger--style-->The independent thumb.
The author understands that this is an unnatural style for many players and that it takes time to get the thumb playing bass lines independent of the melody line being played with the fingers The exercises begin very simply, but progress steadily and do become more challenging. The author is very good about providing encouragement with each exercise as well as suggestions on how to build speed and fluidity with the piece.
Second: In Part 2 of the book, the author introduces complete finger style pieces using the steady bass thumb along with increasingly complex melody lines. Mastering these pieces really give you a feel for how finger-style is played. By the time you finish the book (which may be many, many months) you will have a good handle on playing acoustic finger style guitar and that opens up a vast range of song material.
Highly recommend the book, but realize it is a longer term commitment to building playing skills.
UPDATE: After working with this book for about six weeks, I still think it is the best of the lot. The audio files of slides and hammer-on/pull-off illustrates some very nice sounds that can be produced once you understand the technique.
The only thing I feel may be missing are fingering suggestions for some of the more challenging exercises. For example: one exercise requires a hammer-on of the 3rd to 4th fret on the 3rd string followed by a hammer on of the 3rd to 5th fret on the 2nd string. Finally, the first string is fretted at the 5th and 3rd. It is okay in quarter notes, but it is played in 8th notes. There is not a lot of time for moving fingers, so a suggestion for how to finger this for easiest playing would have been very helpful. How, a player will eventually find the best fingering, but a suggestion on some of these more challenging pieces would be very helpful.

One of the best "riffs and licks" book for fingerstyle blues

I've bought and used many fingerstyle blues books. This one is different and valuable. Do understand that this is NOT a book of complete blues pieces. There are only a few complete blues pieces in the book. Instead, it is "riffs and licks" book, and specifically in the key of E throughout. So the scope of it is very specific. Also, this is not really a beginner book, but beginners can use it. Beginners will be able to handle the easiest licks in each section, but will get frustrated by the more difficult licks, as he develops each concept. To really get the most out of this, you should already be a competent intermediate level fingerstyle blues player. That said, it is very good book that shows how specific nuances are developed. Bends, pull offs, hammer-ons, vibrato, syncopation, up the neck, triplets, on and on. In each case, he starts with a very easy lick, then expands on it to develop it into a more complex phrase. While there are some complete pieces at the end, it is mostly up to the student to build this material into their own pieces. In other words, here is the tool set, learn to play them, then use your own imagination. As a guitar teacher, I can really appreciate this style of learning, and I do it myself with my own lesson material. I am glad to see this book getting 5 stars from most readers, as this book is little bit "vulnerable" to bad reviews because it is not a song book. This is a book for the serious fingerstyle blues player who wants a more complete understanding of the craft.

My favorite book so far from Joseph

My favorite book so far from Joseph! This is obviously a very specific genre so its not for everyone but if you want to play acoustic fingerstyle blues (old school) this is for you. The exercises are great and the method is as well. It quickly goes from easy to challenging however those simple excercises compile, making the later exercises "easier". I purchased it on kindle first but like it so much I am going to order a hard copy as well (and cross my fingers for an app version).
