Democracy, by Alecos Papadatos, Abraham Kawa, Annie Di Donna

Democracy opens in 490 B.C., with Athens at war. The hero of the story, Leander, is trying to rouse his comrades for the morrow's battle against a far mightier enemy, and begins to recount his own life, having borne direct witness to the evils of the old tyrannical regimes and to the emergence of a new political system. The tale that emerges is one of daring, danger, and big ideas, of the death of the gods and the tortuous birth of democracy. We see that democracy originated through a combination of chance and historical contingency--but also through the cunning, courage, and willful action of a group of remarkably talented and driven individuals.

Alecos Papadatos and Annie DiDonna, artists behind the international phenomenon Logicomix, together with writer Abraham Kawa, deliver a graphic novel bursting with extraordinary characters and vibrant color, one that also offers fresh insight into how this greatest of civic inventions came to be.

Review

"For all that Democracy wrestles with history and politics and these weighty matters, the story is accessible, entertaining and personal, and full of gods, action, romance and more. It’s fun, it’s heartbreaking, it’s thought-provoking, and it’s tragic―and it’s absolutely one of the greatest graphic novels I expect to read all year." ―io9

"Simultaneously a standout historical examination and a compelling story." ―Booklist (starred review)

"Each individual element wonderfully serves the whole. The look and feel of Papadatos’ art is such a huge part of what has been accomplished here that it must not only be commended, its many virtues must be recommended for repeated viewings, for studying, for close-up, detailed scanning, and for pulling back and taking in whole pages, sometimes two facing pages working together as one . . . Papadatos has animated, storyboarded, and directed in film. His cinematic talents are powerfully on display here . . . In any library of great graphic novels, Democracy can rightfully be placed on the shelf with Art Spiegelman’s Maus and Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis. Indeed, in any library of fine books of any kind, Democracy can be proudly added." ―New York Journal of Books

"An incisive and entertaining visual history of the roots of democracy. This journey is a saga comparable to epics such as Frank Miller’s 300 and Eric Shanower’s Age of Bronze, with a touch of Jack Kirby’s wondrous mythological civilizations . . . Papadatos’s lively and energetic art illuminates battles, alliances, political machinations, and vivid personalities, and Di Donna’s intense coloring is gloriously rich . . . Like Logicomix, this is a brilliantly realized stealth education." ―Publishers Weekly (starred review)

"Blending big ideas, dialectic tussles and absorbing narrative . . . Democracy offers a visual treat as much as an intellectual feast. Its artwork slides fluidly between domestic scenes, civic debate, supernatural commentary (Athena, Apollo and Dionysus have speaking parts), and Hollywood-style climaxes . . . The authors have fashioned not a dry civics lesson but an unfinished epic drama." ―Independent

"Hugely ambitious . . . All tricked out in Papadatos's lean-limbed sweat and savoury cartoon-coloured art." ―Sunday Herald

"This graphic historical novel from the authors of the hit Logicomix details the birth of democracy in war-torn Greece 2,500 years ago." ―2015 Holiday Gift Guide, LA Times

Very good art, excellent storytelling and a very clever conclusion. Yes but

Bottom Lin First:
History or Fiction. Well some of both. This is a highly fictionalized version of a time period during which Athens force out a government that was tyrannical and backed up the Spartan Army. In its place was one that has some semblance to what we would call Democracy. This is good story telling made better with good artwork. Even so I was expecting something better. Highly recommended but be aware that this is not something to cite in a college level history exam.

Four star is hardly a condemnation of a book. In Democracy, Alecos Papadatos , Abraham Kawa (and Annie Di Donna have written an entertaining story. That which is not document history relating documented words of only historical people works with the above to produce a plausible version of how, why and who helped Athens to move to a stable form of representative government. It may be coming close to a spoiler to add that this is not exactly the story of good, good guys crushing bad, bad guys. It is left open for you to decide the degree to which the romantic promise of democratic government was realized by the people of Athens.

Perhaps a view point not often made explicit is that in the real world conflict is never a matter of the purely righteous and the completely evil. More often the choice is between relative degree of less than perfect.

My reservation and reason for withholding the 5th star is that, having read Democracy, my sense is that the fiction of the story out weighs the facts. This would not have caused my 1-star let down if the fiction had been had been made explicit. Early in the story it should be clear that this was intended to be read as fiction and that the history was restricted to major events and certain characters. I disliked that I had to sort this out.
A second aspect of this sorting is that historic names are added to the mix on the speculation that they may have been there and in the roles needed to serve the plot. Sometimes the additions were no more than name dropping.

Birth of a Nation(s)
By J. Edgar Mihelic, MBA
I picked this up off the shelf because I liked the previous work by the authors, “Logicomix”. I liked that one so much I went out and bought a book of Wittgenstein and then also of Bertrand Russel. I actually read the Russel, maybe I’ll get to the Ludwig.

So reading this was basically in comparison to that book, and in comparison, this one suffers a bit. The authors’ thing is graphic history, and it works to a point. My guess is that this one is not as effective because though there is an interesting story to tell, there are fewer points of reference for me as a modern reader and there are fewer primary texts for the authors to draw on. They also insert a fictional character as the vehicle for they story they are telling, so that the both of democracy has some eyes looking at it and the reader can relate to that person.

I’m not sure if it works and it implies a linearity to the development of democracy that might not be true. Overall, the book could compliment a high school civics class as a way to lighten the mood and engage the students, but it isn’t history in the terms of this is what happened (if even that is history at all either).

Great story complimented by stunning visuals. Only recommendation is make sure to set aside enough time to read in one sitting. It's best that way.
