This rating doesn't have anything to do with the book - it came in great condition - my problem was I ordered two books and only got one. Understanding things can get mixed up in transit (or whatever), I waited a month or so before sending an email asking about the book. I was hoping to get a quick response but never got one (I think?). It is what it is. Anyway, this is an awesome book for anybody looking for an introduction to drafting standards/methods; I highly recommend it to anyone who is serious about a starting position in the technical/mechanical drafting field. The book offers a lot of great visualization exercises that involve different follow-along practice methods for complex modeling.

Not real happy

The book arrived on time and for that I have no problem, the shipping service worked great. My unhappyness results from the book not being complete. During a recent classroom session we were directed to turn to the appendix, imagine my dismay when the appendix was not in the book. A further review of the book revealed several of the photos were not present and in place of the photo "FPO" in place of the graphics.

Excellent text for technical drawing

This book is an excellent reference for anyone needing an introduction to or a reference for technical drawing. Most of the content concerning machine component drawings are geared (no pun intended) more toward traditional methods for technical drawings (i.e. compass, ruler and pencil), but the methods given are well suited to modern computer-oriented methods of solid modeling. Engineers in the manufacturing industry will find it especially useful, as it can be a helpful reference for weldment drawings.

The Relationship Code is the report of a longitudinal study, conducted over a ten-year period, of the influence of family relationships and genetic factors on competence and psychopathology in adolescent development. The sample for this landmark study included 720 pairs of same-sex adolescent siblings--including twins, half siblings, and genetically unrelated siblings--and their parents.

Using a clear expressive style, David Reiss and his coinvestigators identify specific mechanisms that link genetic factors and the social environment in psychological development. They propose a striking hypothesis: family relationships are crucial to the expression of genetic influences on a broad array of complex behaviors in adolescents. Moreover, this role of family relationships may be very specific: some genetic factors are linked to mother-child relationships, others to father-child relations, some to relationship warmth, while others are linked to relationship conflict or control. The specificity of these links suggests that family relationships may constitute a code for translating genetic influences into the ontogeny of behaviors, a code every bit as important for behavior as DNA-RNA.

Scientific spirit of inquiry exploring nature-nurture

This inaugural book of Harvard University Press's new series on Adolescent Lives is a landmark study. It is based on the close cooperation of four separate university research units of "a twelve-year study of a large and scientifically precious national sample of 720 pairs of adolescent siblings and their parents" screened from hundreds of thousands of households. One is left in awe by the humility and caution in drawing inferences, the thoroughness of research and the respect for truth of the scientific spirit of inquiry. Readers are guided through the journey into the mind of the scientists and their various reasons for the methodology and choices for the collaborative project. "The Relationship Code provides a blueprint for what the next two decades of developmental study might bring--more nuanced portrayals of how biological, psychological, and social processes contribute to the unfolding of lives." (Foreword by Jeanne Brooks-Gunn, Columbia University). The book is unique in integrating research on both psychosocial and behavioral genetic influences in adolescent development. In contrast to most traditional studies, it includes step-families of at least 5 years and focused more on nonshared environments in the family, i.e., what is unique to different siblings that may account for individual differences. (E.g., a depressed mother withdraws from one of her children but not another, a child born after a recent death in the family may be treated differently, different peer groups or life events and percetual "bias".) In "thesis", the author reported the impact of environment on psychological development. But in "antithesis", it sheds much light on the genetic influences on the seven measures or domains of adolescent adjustment: antisocial behavior, depression, cognitive agency, sociability, autonomy, social responsibility and self-worth. Also what was formerly considered environmental factors in family systems may have roots in the genes. In "synthesis" it stressed that genetic and family factors are both important. "Our proposal is not simply that the environment has a general and non-specific facilitative or preparatory role in the behavioral expression of genetic influences, but rather that specific family processes may have distinctive and necessary roles in the actual mechanisms of genetic expression. " (p. 420) Relationships seem to encode genetic development and expression--thus the title of the book. Biology is not destiny. Though the authors, as scientists, are still tentative in proposing such hypothesis, the whole nature-nurture debate is henceforth never either-or, but shifted to a more precise level of how after this study. This is a scholarly and technical book. The main author, David Reiss, in four and a half years, has given an excellent report and has painstakingly made the readers' task much easier by presenting most of the data in numerous graphic charts and reserved the tabular data in the appendix. All those interested in education and growth are much indebted to the whole team's contributions, to their "extraordinary synergy of talent, enthusiasm, and dedication, along with grueling and meticulous work" (p. xv).

The Vital Judo books are my all-time favorite Judo books.

There are two volumes - Throwing Techniques and Grappling Techniques. Rather than the usual textbooks which include only the basics, these books are dedicated solely to applications and combinations. If you want ideas on how and where to apply your favorite throw or ne-waza move, these books are for you. These books are much more like the Judo Masterclass Techniques, and I wish someone was still publishing these as they are outstanding.

I would not recommend this book

As a student at Baylor University (the home University of the author, John M. Davis), I would not recommend this book. I'm sure there are others, I haven't checked, but for anyone interested in learning Partial Differential Equations, this is not a book for learning. I think that was its intent, but it is honestly just a teacher's guide, and without the correct teachers, it is essentially useless. Too much space is given to the history of PDEs and not their applications and solutions. In each section, either the heat or wave equation is worked as an example and you as the reader are expected to figure out the other one. With only one or two examples per section, the book leaves you with many questions, possibly more than you came in with. There is no solutions manual, so there is no way to check your answers or your method. There are also quite a few typos. When problems are worked, steps are skipped, or asked for you to complete in the exercises. Several concepts are left out as well, including the Dirac-Delta Function, a somewhat big idea in the world of Laplace and Fourier transforms. This means that any online solution that you may find for a problem in the book (after hours of googling) will not make sense to you and not match to the "correct" solution in the back of the book. Like I said, I'm sure there are other books, so I hope teachers and professors reading this will use a different text.

Review of "Zero Visibility" by Georgia Beers

The really wonderful thing about Lesbian Fiction is that it has really become pretty diverse in terms of genre.Yes, I think we still have a ways to go, but there are more options to choose from today than there were in, say, 2000. Heck, in the last 10 years alone, the Golden Crown Literary Society has gone from giving out awards in 3 categories to giving out awards in 13 categories. (And I have no doubt that we'll be adding categories in future years.) Like a good mystery/thriller? Not a problem. Enjoy sinking your teeth into a good vampire story? Yep, lots of those, too. How about ghost stories? Sweet, because there are some really good ones out there.

Seriously. If there's a genre you like, you'll probably be able to find it in Lesbian Fiction.

While I do love all of the choices (and I read from many, many different genres), when all is said and done, I still cannot resist a solid romance. You know...that girl-meets-girl story with its great characters and relationship obstacles, all culminating in a great "Happily Ever After" ending. If the universe commanded that I only be allowed to read romance novels for the rest of my life, I'd be okay with that. It's probably the perpetual single girl in me that enjoys reading about others finding their Happily Ever After. I like living vicariously through these fictional characters that, in some ways, are very much like me...and yet, not like me at all. In short, romance novels make me happy.

Zero Visibility (Brisk Press) is Georgia Beers' newest offering. It's a romance. Because that's what Beers does - she writes romances. She does so proudly. Thank goodness for readers, she does it well.

I always enjoy the characters that Beers creates in her novels. Beers offers us characters who make mistakes; they're characters who have issues. They're not perfect. They're fallible. I can relate to them. Emerson Rosberg and Cassie Prescott are two such characters. Both women are dealing with mistakes they've made in the past and they each have their own ways of dealing with those mistakes. For Cassie, it's a bit easier. Lake Henry is her home. She has her family and friends to help her through and be her support. Emerson doesn't have that safety net. No siblings. Her mother has just died. Her father is not there for her. She really doesn't have friends to speak of. She just has herself. Until Cassie enters her life. And that causes a whole new set of issues that Emerson doesn't feel equipped to handle. It's a wonderful balance and Beers does a nice job of laying things out and really delving into minds of these two characters. Beers gives them depth. She brings a realism to Emerson and Cassie that had me relating with each woman on different levels. It's very satisfying.

The supporting characters in Zero Visibility are more than just filler. Each one serves a particular purpose throughout the novel. Periodically, Beers showed us the perspective of some of these supporting characters. I'll admit that I was thrown by this the first time it happened. It took me out of the story for a minute. ("Whoa! Why did we just switch to that perspective?") But I settled down and kept reading. Half-way through the section, I wasn't wondering anymore. And the next time it happened, I wasn't pulled out of the story at all. It made sense and just added more layers to Emerson's and Cassie's characters. I love Beers' knack for giving each a very distinctive voice. With each new perspective, there were very subtle changes in language use and sentence structure. Whether this was Beers' plan or not, I don't know, but I sure thought it was effective.

Beers doesn't skimp on the details. She takes the time to really paint the picture for her readers. Never been to the Adirondacks? No worries. Beers has you covered. From the description of The Lakeshore Inn to the layout of Cassie's sporting good store to the walkways and trails of Lake Henry, Beers provided the details and visual cues I needed to picture everything clearly. Sometimes I actually felt like I was breathing the crisp mountain air. Her descriptions of characters are clear and, in some cases, recall iconic figures. You'll love her description of Arnold Cross.

One of the things I've always enjoyed about Beers' romances is the slow build. Even though I can "see" what the characters can't as their relationship forms, I don't have an urge to yell, "Oh, c'mon already!" Yes, I can see things happening. Yes, I want them to see what I see. But I don't want to rush it. Part of the joy is watching Emerson and Cassie figure it out. It's great when the supporting characters see what I see and start nudging Emerson and Cassie in different directions. It's like I'm sharing a secret with them. And, yet, I still don't want things to move too quickly. I still want the slow build. Sexual tension? Yes, please. Internal struggles over the way their feelings are changing? Most definitely. Hop into bed at the earliest opportunity. Put on the brakes, Buster! I've come to care too much about the characters to have them rush things for a tumble in the sheets. I want the Happily Ever After to be believable. I want it to be for good. Beers' talent for assuring a solid HEA is off the charts.

If you're looking for an edge-of-your-seat mystery, or a nail-biting adventure, or vampires and demons, I've got some suggestions for you that will not include Zero Visibility. Because if that's what you want, you won't get it from this novel. But if you're looking for a solid romance with great characters and a complex, fulfilling love story, then Zero Visibility should definitely be on your list.

Georgia Beers at her very best.

Having read all Georgia Beers’ novels I always get excited when a new release is imminent. You know without doubt you are going to meet well-developed characters and enjoy their growing friendship, affection and eventually love.

Cassie Prescott has always lived in Lake Henry. Set in the Adirondacks, the mountains of upstate New York, Cassie enjoys the changing of the seasons and couldn’t picture living anywhere more beautiful. Her friends and family surround her every day and she feels loved and part of the community.

Emerson Rosberg is returning to Lake Henry for her mother’s funeral. After a tragic skiing accident as a teenager Emerson ran as far away from Lake Henry and her family as she could get. L.A has been her home ever since. The last time she had visited her mother was 5 years ago and Emerson has had to deal with that guilty knowledge from the moment she had received news about her mother’s death.

Cassie and Emerson strike up an unexpected friendship, each having regrets and recovering from bad choices. The more time they spend together, the more each one begins to influence the other. The reader can’t help but be drawn to the characters. Each with their own weaknesses, fragility and foibles.

Ms Beers paints a picture with a beautiful backdrop, where the spectacular colours of Fall dance along the pages and the crisp clear air surrounds you. Add to that two women who’s character development is so magnificent that you can picture yourself having them both as a friends and you have a masterpiece in romance.

Some authors have a gift of writing strong, powerful and stunning characters that stay with us long after the final page is read, Ms Beers is one of those authors.

Great Romance

I loved Georgia Beers new novel Zero Visibility! I great story with lovable characters. Emerson was an olympic hopeful skier until a tragic accident ruined her chances for the gold. She leaves the small town she grew up in and everybody behind thinking herself a failure until her mother passes away and she forced to return. She meets Cassie when she returns and what follows is really a testament to the human spirit and a journey of soulmates. I highly recommend this romance for a light fun read that will leave you smiling.
