European Zoos Are Undergoing Some Dramitic Improvements for Both Animal and Visitor.

Anthony Sheridan is an economist who has written a first-hand, objective review of the best zoological gardens in Europe. This is far and away the best modern guide to European zoos, contains lots of interesting facts and photos. Rating and ranking zoos is no easy task and subject to a lot of pre-exisiting bias on the part of previous authors. Mr. Sheridan tells it like it is, utilizing sound criteria like conservation contributions, exhibit quality and public appreciation (attendance and membership numbers). He does not just look at the numbers but personally visits most of the zoos he evaluates.
Zoos have changed dramatically in the last few decades with vastly improved naturalisitic habitats, improved animal care standards and their direct contributions to wildlife conservation. As the author points out not all zoos are improving but the ones that are, have become much more dynamic conservation learning centers that inspire visitors to care more deeply about the wildlife extinction crisis that is decimating much of our planet. Zoos still must get better but the zoos in Vienna, Leipzig (Germany) and Zurich are leading the way to a much brighter future for their aniamls, as well as their counterparts in the wild.
